Outdoor Room Basics
The concept of an outdoor room goes beyond simply placing a few chairs on a patio. It’s about creating a defined space with purpose, personality, and the same thoughtful touches you’d bring to any interior room. Think cozy seating, ambient lighting, weather-resistant rugs, and even outdoor kitchens or fireplaces.
Define the Space
Just like your interior rooms have walls and boundaries, outdoor rooms require definition. Use elements to define a clear zone, like flooring, structures and enclosures. Depending on where your outdoor room is located on your property might require more or less privacy screening.
Choose a Purpose
Before you start assembling your outdoor room, determine how you want to use the space. Common outdoor room uses include dinning, entertaining, lounging, relaxing, playing, cooking and more. From there you can determine what furnishings, structures, appliances, accessories, etc. you will need.
Select Appropriate Furniture
Furniture makes or breaks an outdoor room. Look for materials built to withstand the elements. Invest in outdoor woods like teak and acacia, weather resistant metals, good quality (resin) wicker, and outdoor fabrics.
Layered Lighting
Lighting dramatically affects ambiance just like indoors, transforming a room from daytime to evening. Layer different lighting sources to have varying heights, creating warmth and depth to your spaces. Options include string lights, lanterns, candles, uplighting in trees and structures, step lighting and more. Lean into solar options if possible.
Add Shade & Shelter
Comfort outdoors depends heavily on protection from the elements like sun, wind and rain. There are many options including permanent solutions to movable elements, including pergolas, umbrellas, awnings, outdoor curtains, shade sails and more.
Incorporate Greenery
Plants are the soul of an outdoor room. They add color, texture, privacy, and life. Use containers and planters to decorate and divide spaces. Trailing plants can create screens and drama while smaller plants and flowers can create ambience and serenity.
Include Finishing Details
Don’t forget the details. The finishing touches are what make an outdoor room feel truly special. Cozy pillows, throws and rugs elevate an outdoor room, fire pits and heaters add warmth, while outdoor decor like sculptures and garden ornaments add charm. Additionally candles, speakers, outdoor appliances are practical and create a vibe.
MJ Insider Decor Tip
Create an outdoor room with the same intention as your interior spaces. Define a space with purpose and personality with the same thoughtful touches you bring to any interior room.
5 Outdoor Garden Rooms
A Secret Garden Escape
A private hide away spot to escape and take time for yourself. Whether it’s an early cup of coffee or an afternoon beverage, it’s the perfect spot to unwind, relax and commune with nature. Situated in our vegetable garden this bistro set provides the perfect spot to take a beat. The space is both pretty and practical. Mr. Masterpiece’s favorite late afternoon ritual is to come out here with a cocktail in hand and water the garden. It’s the little pleasures in life!
A Rest & Relaxation Retreat
Another seating area where we slow down and take in our surroundings. This front sitting room is more social since it’s in the front of the house and we can sit and watch the neighborhood. It’s our preferred spot to enjoy an evening cocktail before dinner. It’s also a great spot to greet guests and enjoy some merriment before going inside. We have more seating tucked in behind the chairs to accommodate others. The sound of the cascading water from the water fountain is soothing and welcoming.

A Dining Entertaining Area
Eating al fresco is always enjoyable and it creates a festive mood with vacay vibes. Entertaining outside, merely by just being outside, immediately makes the gathering more relaxed and informal than an indoor affair. It’s easy to linger longer in this setting and enjoy everything nature has to offer.

A Quiet Landing Spot
This quiet spot is easily overlooked since it sits unassumingly in the front of the house. For me it’s a favorite area to decorated seasonally, but it also lends itself to a great vantage point to the neighbors, the street and our front property. It’s a great place to slow down and take a breath for a few seconds. You know the old adage “slow down and smell the roses”.

A Conversational Social Space
This is probably the most used outdoor space whether it’s just our family gathered around making memories or if we are enjoying the company of guests. Make a conversation seating arrangement, which is comfortable, and creates great energy for everybody. Use throws, pillows, plants etc. the same way you would indoors to create charm and stylish decor.

FAQs – How to Create an Outdoor Garden Room
Q1. Do I need planning permission to create an outdoor room?
A1. In most instances basic outdoor rooms with trellises, outdoor furniture and patio umbrellas do not require any type of permit. That being said, always check with your town ordinances before creating anything requiring a large investment and permanence. Larger structures like covered pergolas, outdoor kitchens with gas connections, or rooms close to property boundaries may require approval depending on your local regulations.
Q2. What furniture materials are best for outdoor use?
A2. The most durable outdoor furniture materials include teak, eucalyptus, powder-coated aluminium, and all-weather resin wicker. For cushions and upholstery, look for solution-dyed acrylic fabrics designed for outdoor use‚ which resist fading, mildew, and moisture better than standard fabrics.
Q3. Can I create an outdoor room on a small balcony or terrace?
A3. Absolutely! Even the smallest outdoor spaces can become a proper outdoor room with the right approach. Focus on compact, multi-functional furniture, vertical gardening, wall-mounted lighting, and a small outdoor rug to define the space. Less is more. Select a few quality pieces rather than overcrowding the space.

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.”
