MJ Insider Decor Tip

Stay true to your style and your home will feel intentional and cohesive. Trends are simply guidelines to be used as suggestions and inspiration rather than strict rules to follow. You do you, regardless of what social media is sharing, your BFF is saying or retailers are showing.

1

Front Door Wreath

Front door wreaths greet your guests in style in anticipation to what lies inside. It’s a big smile for your home, and much like jewelry it can make or break a cute outfit. It sets the tone for your home and welcomes everyone who crosses through the door. It’s a big job and with a little seasonal intentionality it creates an instant mood, in the best way possible.

2

Mailbox Decor

Flying the American flag on your mailbox and adding a festive bow sporting the red white and blue gives instant festive curb appeal. This sets the seasonal tone before guests even reach the front porch and door. You can learn how to make a bow like this easily here {a Bow Tutorial – How to Create the most Fantastic Ribbon Masterpiece}. Assemble some pretty ribbons and in 30 minutes you’ll have an amazing festive bow.

3

Bunting Here & There

Patriotic bunting looks amazing on home exteriors. Whether you hang it on fences, pillars, or eves it dresses up your home for the 4th of July or any patriotic holiday and event you are celebrating. I have cotton bunting with faded colors for a vintage feel, but bunting comes in many different designs and sizes to fit any exterior.

4

Flags Staked Anywhere & Everywhere

This is by far the easiest way to decorate your home with patriotic intention whether outside or inside. Stick flags into plants, buckets, planters, any type of container and voila- instant Americana vibes. You can find inexpensive flag options at the Dollar Tree and Amazon, plus many places provide them for free during patriotic events. I prefer to tea stain some of these flags if they are too bright and bold, providing a softer aesthetic and vintage vibe.

5

Patriotic Accents on the Porch

Adding unique patriotic touches to your porch decor amps the festive vibes. A small bunting dresses our vintage goat cart and again a flag here and there is an easy and simple touch with great seasonality. You can learn about porch curb appeal and design in this post {How to Refresh a Spring Porch}.

6

Entryway

Once your guests have gone from curb to porch to front door they will cross the threshold into your home. Entryways are super important in welcoming folks and setting the tone. Fresh and well appointed decor is important and adding seasonal intention is always on point.

7

Mantelscape

The mantel always begs to be decorated in style and why not for the 4th of July? Using greenery and organic elements softens the red, white and blue color palette. Lean into flags, bunting and garlands to provide the patriotic vibes. Use red white and blue decor in an edited fashion and highlight American specific motifs.

8

Centerpiece

Dining room, kitchen, or outdoor tables are the perfect spots to create a seasonal centerpiece. Create a display with elements you would normally use to decorate with and just add one or two pieces which accentuate the patriotic theme. Simple is better here.

9

Coffee Table

Just like our dining tables, coffee tables are a prefect stage for seasonality. Just some simple touches here go a long way. Add one or two patriotic pieces to your existing coffee table vignette. You don’t have to recreate the wheel everytime you decorate a space in your home.

10

Occasional Table

Side tables are usually work horses for necessary items like tissues or coasters or remotes. Holidays are the perfect time to give these occasional tables the limelight. Giving these otherwise unnoticed utilitarian pieces a huge seasonal presence gives them the spotlight for the season.

11

Tables Settings

If you’re hosting the 4th of July or any other patriotic event, you don’t need tabletop ware with flags, stars and stripes. Instead use the same techniques applied to decorating with color, motifs and patterns that provide all the Americana vibes, stretching your existing pieces.

12

Festive Set-ups

A 4th of July buffet is the best way to go to create a relaxed and cozy atmosphere for guests and hosts alike. Set up food and beverage stations so folks can help themselves as the day unfolds. Extending your food, linen, floral and more options to red, white and blue is an instant holiday boost!

13

Festive Food

Extending the festivities to the actual food amps up the patriotic feels to the next level. There’s so many possibilities from appetizers, salads, beverages and more. They say we eat with our eyes first, so creating festive food options is an easy way to go, which creates a big wow factor.

14

Crafts & DIYs

Patriotic decor crafts are a fun, affordable, and personal way to celebrate American holidays throughout the year. Whether you prefer a classic and traditional look or a modern farmhouse aesthetic, the versatility of red, white, and blue makes it easy to find a style that fits your home. A DIY piece will always be unique and full of character, setting it apart from mass produced products in the market place.

15

Florals

Fresh flowers, plants, and organic elements provide a freshness to home interiors on the daily, but paired with red, white and blue creates an easy and stylish decor accent. There’s an endless number of flowers, stems, plants you can use. Simply chose selections which coordinate with your look and style.

16

Banners, Swags, Garlands, Bunting

Hanging elements provide dimension and movement to decor vignettes. They can be hung to accent vignettes, draped on the mantel, frame a doorway or swept across a piece of furniture. Hanging garlands and swags on a mirror always provide that reflection which adds interest and depth.

17

FLAGS

I said it before, and I’ll stay it again, the easiest way to inject patriotic vibes into your home decor is to add flags throughout your spaces. Use them in vases or planters or draped anywhere and everywhere. Simply use one flag tucked in here or there. This is an easy peasy decor idea. Or use a collection of flags for a bigger impact. Either way it injects huge patriotic vibes to any space.

18

Red, White & Blue

Color alone can evoke a certain mood or feeling. The red, white and blue always gives the Americana feels and patriotic vibes. Vintage dishes and books are some of my favorite items to use in the colors of the season to decorate. Look at some of your red pieces from Christmas or Valentines day that can appropriately play double duty. Are you a blue and white decorator? Easy peasy to transform some of these pieces into patriotic decor. Look at linens, ribbons, and textiles in the RWB color way.

19

Cultural Motifs

Baseball is America’s favorite pastime and I love to use baseballs as decor this time of year. Not a baseball fan? That’s not a problem. Use motifs engraved in our nation that speak to you. Think of words that evoke patriotism like freedom, liberty, justice, old glory etc.

20

Historical Touches

Independence Day and any patriotic holiday is based on the history of our nation. Use historical touches to bring this thought front and center. A framed copy of the Declaration of Independence, or the sheet music for the Star Spangled Banner next to a majestic flags is all you need.

MJ Insider Decor Tip

Do not recreate the wheel every time you decorate for a new season or holiday. Look at things you’ve done in the past which you have enjoyed and create a formula from it. Use the same formula with different pieces to create a new display without having to start from scratch.

Whether you are looking for patriotic specific decor, red, white & blue pieces or perennial decor you can integrate with any seasonal decor, there are a variety of places to source. Regardless of where you shop, I have one key pointer for you. Use a discerning eye and edited shopping mode when shopping for patriotic and seasonal decor in general. Keep in mind that the display window for these pieces is much shorter than everyday decor. Try to lean into your everyday options and accent with the patriotic baubles. Decor extends its use and worth this way.

  1. Great post, MaryJo. I particularly liked the use of vintage blue and red plates in displays and the many ways you used baseballs. Florals are always a favorite and loved your display. Have a great week.
