patriotic tablescape with chalkboard flags

How do you set a table for the 4th of July without using red and blue tabletop items? We will show you how to do it and yet still remain festive by setting a patriotic tablescape with chalkboard flags.

I am not a huge red gal. I have mentioned it here before, and I am sure I will mention it again. No red around here at Christmas, but focus on silver, golds and winter whites instead. BUT for the fourth of July or any other patriotic event it’s tough leaving out red; or blue for that matter.

I don’t use much blue either. I am pretty neutral, which my darling daughter considers really boring.

To set this patriotic table I used a row of American flags down the center of the table as the focal centerpiece. I used a wooden planter full of assorted Ball jars overflowing with flags in different sizes. This is the only pop of the red and blue you will see on the table.

The centerpiece sets the tone and totally stands out. Then all the other details that are a nod to the holiday are in neutral tones.

I created the chalkboard trays using dollar tree silver trays. These trays were big sellers during my consigning days. They are super easy to make, and I will share all the details in an upcoming post. For today, I simply use them to draw chalk flags.

There’s a tray at each place setting with a slightly different version of our Star Spangled banner. It continues the flag theme in a more subtle manner.

I don’t have to invest in red or blue dishes, but I still have an American vibe at each person’s place setting. Don’t get me wrong, I love dishes, but this totally does the trick in a more versatile way.

I can use these trays in so many different ways, which I will share in my upcoming post with the tutorial. Of course, this is strictly a decorative tabletop item and not to use for serving or eating.

I also used star napkin rings to tie in with the flag motif, which I bought on clearance after the 4th of July last year. I like galvanized pieces, which you can read about here{metals IV – galvanized}; plus I can also use the star napkin rings for birthdays or New Year’s eve.

I actually used a few galvanized pieces for this tablescape, including the napkin rings, the chargers and the boats I have stacked on the side. The relaxed feeling of galvanized items lends themselves to summer entertaining, which tends to be less formal.

It’s fun setting the table using unique pieces to set the mood and tone of an event. Wishing everyone a fabulous and festive 4th of July holiday!
