fall porch decor

I love decorating for all the seasons, but Fall is by far my favorite. Organic fall decor takes its cues directly from nature, swapping mass-produced plastic pumpkins and synthetic garlands for the real thing, including items like heirloom gourds, bundles of golden wheat, sun-dried leaves, and charming cinderella pumpkins. There are so many pieces of nature which you can bring into your home to give all the Fall feels. This decor guide provides varied options you can borrow from Mother Nature, leaving all the seasonal tchotchkes behind and creating a warm, calm and grounded space.

MaryJo behind the blog

Using organic decor is an easy and economical way to decorate for the season. Many elements can be foraged from your own property or nature walks. You can also find many items at farmer’s markets, local grocers or garden nurseries. Look around with a decor intention and you will be amazed at what you find.

Falling leaves are the iconic symbol for the Autumn season, and there are so many ways to use pretty leaves in you decor. Leaves come in different sizes, shapes and colors making them super versatile.

Pumpkins

Pumpkins are the belle of the ball for the Autumnal season. There are so many colors and shapes to chose from, which can coordinate with any mood and | or decor aesthetic.

3
Gourds

I feel like gourds are the step child to the favored pumpkin, but they are a fantastic decor accent. They tend to be moodier than pumpkins, and they bring an understated (and sometimes under appreciated) seasonal intent.

Acorns

Acorns are a perky and small detail which add a seasonal touch in a very subtle and simple manner. Acorns can easily be found around neighborhoods and parks already shed from trees on the ground. A word of caution is to clean them properly if you personally forage them from nature.

Wheat

Wheat adds great golden color and amazing texture to interior spaces. They are great to create many DIY decor accents plus look fabulous clustered on a mantel or a table centerpiece. The wheat stems always add movement and dimension to any setting.

Corn

Whether it’s cornstalks, Indian corn, husks, etc., all these elements add incredible texture and interest to fall decor that is ingrained during this time of year. Corn stalks are always favorites around here to add seasonal decor outside our home whether by the mail box, on the front porch or flanking the garage doors.

Branches

Branches are easily foraged outdoors with beautiful fall foliage. Take a look around next time you’re on a walk or at a park or in your own backyard even, and I bet you spy a pretty branch that has fallen from a tree just waiting for you to bring it home.

Pinecones

Pine cones are one of my favorite elements to use inside and outside our home from September all the way through to the end of winter. I have foraged pine cones in different parts of the country, and I am always amazed how different the pine cones are from region to region. There’s chunky and long and skinny and dark and mini.

Mumms

Mumms are the quintessential Fall flower. These Autumnal blooms come in an array of colors which pleases any decor aesthetic inside or outside the home. The grower pots can simply be dropped into your container of choice and they immediately give all the Fall feels.

Sunflowers

The sunflower is a happy flower, which transitions from late summer into early fall seamlessly. And although it also comes in an array of colors the chipper yellow variety is the most commonly used. I love the whitish varieties and pick them up whenever I see them. Use what speaks to you and compliments your decor.

Feathers

Feathers are a favorite of mine to decorate throughout the year, but they really lend themselves to the Fall season. There’s turkey, quail, pheasant and more feathers that are perfect for Autumnal decor.

Cabbages

Ornamental cabbages have fantastic texture and interest. It’s not the first thing people think of when you mention Fall decor, but it adds instant seasonal charm in a unique and understated manner.

Apples

Although apples are around all year long, Fall is known as apple picking season. It’s a great activity for all ages, and if you’ve never been apple picking I highly recommend it. Not only is it fun, but then you can eat the fruit of your labor. Apples are the symbolic gift for teachers at this back to school time and look beautiful piled high in bowls in our homes. It doesn’t get easier than that.

Pears

Just like apples, pears step out in style this time of year. They are fabulous for decor but when elements can play double duty as pretty and then practical as part of our menu, it’s a win all around.

MJ Insider Decor Tip

If you forage organic elements on your own make sure you clean everything appropriately when you bring it home. Some items just simply need a good shake or rub down, while others need special treatments to eradicate pesky critters, mold and dirt in general. Soaking solutions and low oven heat are some of the techniques which can be used for elements like pine cones and acorns.
