Thrifted Baskets for the Win!
Unlike many thrifted pieces currently, baskets have not had a huge hike in prices- insert happy dance here! You can still find many woven pieces at reasonable prices. On this table styling I use varied styles. Some baskets are up-cycled to fit my aesthetic while others are perfect just the way I found them. The range of basket options runs the gamut from double handled baskets to covered baskets to basket trays to lined baskets…and the list goes on.
Texture is the number one thing baskets bring to the party with an array of materials and colors. Baskets are made of wicker, rattan, seagrass, vines and more. Plus they come in different shades. Remember, don’t let the color of a basket deter you, since paint is a magic wand. If you like the shape and look, get it! You can always alter it to fit your style.
MJ Thrifting Pro Tip:
Look at the potential of an item beyond its current state or condition. Items can be altered, up-cycled and recreated with TLC, elevating them to a trend forward piece.
Make sure to thoroughly clean your thrifted baskets when you get them home. Even if they appear clean it’s a good practice. Good ways to wipe down baskets include a can of compressed air, vacuum cleaner extension or a damp cloth. If a basket needs more TLC than that, I recommend maybe hosing it down and allowing it to dry thoroughly outside.
Now let’s get busy & set the table…
How to Set a Thrifted Basket Floral Table
Setting a table with charm and character with rustic and casual touches will enchant your guests and provide plenty of conversation starters. A meaningful and memorable setting creates an atmosphere where everyone relaxes and wants to linger longer. If you spend the time and energy to set a table with intention, you want everyone to enjoy it to its fullest for as long as possible.
Plate Stack
The plate stack starts with a galvanized charger to channel the relaxed, provincial vibes of the baskets. The plates have a floral motif to accentuate the floral basket vibe, which is crowned with a mini basket and dried baby’s breath. The mini baskets were part of my intentional thrifting haul I shared last month.
- Galvanized Plate Charger {Hobby Lobby}
- Mimi Thorisson dinner plate {Anthropologie}
- Glass Doily Accent Plate {Dollar Tree DIY}
- Assorted Silverware {thrifted}
- Mini Basket Favor w/ Baby’s Breath {Thrifted}
The plate stack is set with a casual vibe to blend with the basket theme. I know I just used the DIY doily plates in the last tables scape, but I couldn’t help myself. I love how they turned out and thought they fit well with the theme here.
Place Setting
The place setting is mixed and matched with an assortment of mostly thrifted pieces. The eclectic pieces adds charm and whimsy to the table setting in a relaxed and subtle manner.
- Crystal Water Goblet {inherited}
- Silver Rimmed Vintage Wine Glass {thrifted}
- Gray & White Buffalo Check Napkin {Home Goods}
- Grapevine Napkin Ring {Michaels}
The plate setting continues the casual vibe with mixed and matched pieces. Most of the items are thrifted and creates an eclectic combination. The buffalo plaid napkins keeps with casual vibe, while the grapevine ring coordinates with the basket motif.
Centerpiece
The bare wooden table is a good backdrop for the rustic baskets. For a bit of contrast and interest a French linen table runner provides a footprint for the centerpiece. The juxtaposition of the lux French linen with the organic floral baskets adds a bit of depth and dimension.
- Garnier Thiebau Linen Table Runner {Whim House}
- Assorted Baskets {thrifted}
- Flowers | Greenery {yard}
- Wooden Lanterns {gifted}
- Assorted Tureens {thrifted}
The baskets are full of fresh and dried flowers plus greenery. The mix of flowers and baskets is always a charming and welcoming effect. The white geraniums, dusty miller and ferns are all from our yard, while the white star of Bethlehem is left over from this arrangement. The potted Mexican sage is from our front sitting area, which I borrowed for the table. Dried rose flower heads are also tucked in a basket since I always have some kicking around here. I challenged myself not to buy any flowers to complete this table and I accomplished my goal!

Tips & Recommendations to Keep In Mind When Setting the Table
Identify, Curate & Ground the Theme
A theme whether a holiday, motif or color palette is always a good place to start for a table design. The main theme here are the thrifted baskets with floral accents as a secondary theme. The baskets are on repeat throughout the table as vases for the centerpiece florals, as trays for the server ware and as place setting favors. The florals are showcased in the basket vases, and as motifs on the plates and as a final detail to crown the plate stack.
Shop your Home First
I’m a big proponent of shopping your home first and looking for decor pieces you already own and can use in unexpected ways. Look around your home and search for pieces to use and reuse, extending their purpose and worth. The baskets here are a prime example. Although I use all theses pieces frequently to decorate, organize and entertain, by using them all together in mass here provides a bigger impact. I used the formula from this terra cotta table stying and this garden party table. Look at projects and ideas you have used in the past and reuse them.
Mix & Match
Mixing and matching table top pieces allows freedom to play and removes the pressure to follow any set rules. This allows all the vintage mismatched pieces to shine and add charm and character to any table styling. You don’t need to have a matching set of anything to set a thoughtful and pretty table.
DIYs are your Friend
Creating your own decor and table accents creates a charming homespun atmosphere which is unique and has your personal style. Besides adding character, DIY pieces tend to be more economical than newly bought options. The floral doily pates are a Terrain inspired dupe, adding a perfect delicate floral accent to complement the table setting. Here’s a couple of up-cycles of the thrifted baskets here and here.
Lean into Thrifting
Thrifts are a great resource for table top items. You can source dishes, glassware, linens, silverware and more. You don’t need to spend a fortune to set a pretty and festive table. Many of the pieces on this table are thrifted, including glassware, silverware, tureens and the star of the show- baskets of course!
Are you wondering right about now…
What are the benefits of thrifting?
MJ Thrifting Pro Tip:
Make a list of items you would like to find while thrifting on your phone, and you will always have the list with you whenever you pop into a thrift. Update the list regularly as you find treasures and seek others. Have fun!

FAQs ~ Thrifted Basket Inspired Table
1. What can I use to decorate basket centerpieces?
Flowers and greenery are an obvious choice, whether real, faux or dried. Fruits is another fabulous choice as well as candies or bakery items like rolls, cookies and pastries. Other choices include moss balls, houses plants, topiaries and seasonal decor.
2. What should I pay for a thrifted basket?
That all depends on a few factors. The size and condition of the basket is very important when considering price. Beyond that is the uniqueness of the basket and what you’re willing to pay. That being said, personally I only pay a few dollars for most baskets ($1-$3).
3. How many baskets do I need to create a basket centerpiece?
There’s no clear answer for this. One large or dramatic basket can be enough. If you cluster baskets as used here, I recommend an odd number that fills the center of the table.
THE ART OF SUSTAINABLE SHOPPING
Circular Consumption
Reuse ~ Recycle ~ Repair
The notion of second hand shopping leans into the circular consumption paradigm where wares keep getting bought over and over again rather than landing in the landfill.
