I shared how the birdbath was decorated for Thanksgiving in this post {Thanksgiving welcome ideas}. Today I’ll show you how I decorated the birdbath for the holiday season.

how to decorate a birdbath for Christmas

1. I started by stripping the birdbath of any decor. It’s always a good idea to start with a clean slate when starting a new project.

We found this vintage birdbath in Eugene, Oregon at an Antique mall but there’s also this more simple birdbath or this more ornate version if you are looking for one.

2. Assemble all your supplies. I used pine fresh greenery, pine cones, naturally dried hydrangeas and plastic baubles.

3. Lay your greenery on the bottom of the birdbath to create a bed for all the other pieces. You can find great faux greenery here and here.

4. Next lay some pine cones on the greenery. If you can’t find pine cones where you live these or these are great choices.

5. Then tuck the dried hydrangea stems around the birdbath, nestling the stems under the greenery to secure them. Here is a resource for faux hydrangeas.

6. Arrange your baubles around the bed of greenery in between the pine cones and flowers.

tips on the holiday birdbath

Most of the items I used on this project were foraged one way or another. The greenery I picked up at the tree farm where we got our Christmas tree. I always grab a few branches from the garbage bins. I ask before I take anything and they are always happy for me to haul some branches away.

The hydrangeas are from our backyard, which dried naturally. The pine cones I have foraged through the years from different parks, nature walks, etc. The baubles are the only pieces purchased and the ornaments are from the Dollar Tree and the finials are from Hobby Lobby. These are a great alternative.

I have more outdoor decor to share next week so please make sure to come back and visit.

My heart is full since our home was full over the Thanksgiving break while the kids were home from college. We were able to get our Christmas tree and trim it plus indulge in many other traditions. I can wait to share it all.

  1. I love how your bird bath came out MJ. I’d love to find pinecones like the ones you have, we only seem to have long skinny ones in our area. The chubby pinecones are adorable and to me are the Bell of the ball. ❤️

  2. Hi MaryJo- I love the idea of decorating a birdbath! So smart! Your birdbath looks lovely both for Fall and now for Winter. Where did you find those giant pinecones? They are fabulous. Happy Holidays my friend.

    1. Yes. The birdbath is quickly becoming a favorite to style over here. The chunky pine cones- some from Lake Tahoe and some from Mount Diablo state park which is practically in our backyard. XO- MJ

  3. Love the tip on grabbing the extra branches from the trash bin of the tree lot! It’s genius 🙂
