Inspiration Behind the St. Patrick’s Day Table Set with Vintage Mike Glass

The milk class collection used here is composed of a wide array of pieces. Some are vintage pieces, thrifted or inherited through the years, while others are more recent reproductions with the milk glass look and finish. They all blend and play well together and to the untrained eye the difference is not detected. Layering old and new pieces is a great technique to add depth and interest. Last year I shared how to use vintage milk glass in your St. Patrick’s day decor, and this year we will take it a step further and set a fanciful table for the said holiday. The contrast between the white milk glass and the varied hues of green is everything.

How to Set a Table Using Vintage Milk Glass

I used my milk glass collection to set this table, but you can apply the same principles to set a table for St. Patrick’s Day using any cherished collection. As another example, you can see how to use Wedgwood green Jasperware to set a table here. Other ideas include Jadeite or green depression glass or cabbage ware, which is still having a moment. Use what you have and love. You don’t necessarily need to buy new stuff.

Plate Stack

The plate stack is piled high with layers in touches of green. The crown is a milk glass piece with a moss accent, which is reminiscent of the lush Irish landscapes. Stacking assorted elements creates an interesting display, which will surely delight your guests.

The place setting details are assorted and mismatched, which relaxes the table setting and provides a touch of whimsy. The Saint Patrick’s day holiday includes many whimsical details, including leprechauns, rainbows and pots of gold. You can embrace any of these Irish details to ground the holiday theme.

The centerpiece is grounded with a homemade moss table runner, which ties in with the moss plate chargers and accents on the milk glass dishes. Tips & Recommendations to Keep In Mind When Setting the Table

Curate & Ground the Theme

The main theme is St. Patrick’s day although there are no elements overtly pointing towards the holiday. Simply the color green is the nod to the Irish heritage and few gold coins scattered on the cake plate. The white milk glass is the secondary theme to the table and once again it’s not grounded in the holiday, but simply pairs well with the green. Milk glass actually pairs well with many color ways and it’s a great foil for many different holidays. Look at pieces you own and use them in unexpected ways, which makes them more resourceful and sustainable.

Layer Patterns & Textures

Including varied patterns and textures on a tablescape adds interest, depth and character. The ticking stripe on the place mat, the vine on the dinner plate and the plaid on the napkins compliment each other by color hue and scale. While the moss on the charger, runner and accent balls brings organic texture to the table setting. Layering textures and patterns adds a richness to the overall table design.

Shop your Home First

Like I mentioned above, look at the items you already own and use them in new and unexpected ways. I wouldn’t have thought to use my milk glass collection on a Saint Patrick’s day themed table, except last year I used it with green decor and it brainstormed the idea for this tablescape. Look at projects and ideas you have used in the past and reuse them. Look around your home and search for pieces to use and reuse, extending their purpose and worth.

Mix & Match

Mixing and matching table top pieces provides freedom to play and removes the pressure to follow any set rules. Mismatched pieces add charm and character to any table styling and relaxes the setting. You don’t need to have a matching set of anything to set a thoughtful and pretty table.  

Thrifting for the Win

You don’t need to spend a fortune to set a pretty and festive table. You can always find table top pieces at garage sales, thrifts and flea markets. Some of the pieces on this table are thrifted, including the glass appetizer plates, many of the milk glass pieces and most of the silverware. Much of my silver plate collection has been curated through years of thrifting. Thrifted pieces are not only economical but environmental sound, which add character and charm to any interior.

DIYs are your Friend

Creating your own decor and table accents creates a charming homespun atmosphere which is unique and has your personal style. Besides adding character, DIY pieces tend to be more economical than newly bought options. Here the moss plate chargers and the table runner are homespun creations.
