Styled 2 Ways Transition Summer to fall

Although Susan and I both like many of the same things, we both have unique styles of our own, and we want to share how the same idea can be expressed in different ways. Both ways are equally as fantastic, and appreciating other unique takes on the same idea expands our own personal style.

Sylvia Plath said it best, referring to August as the odd uneven time, when the days of Summer begin to dwindle, the air changes, but we haven’t quite been graced by the presence of Fall yet. This in between time is the perfect opportunity to start planning and prepping for the Fall season. I hope these simple ideas inspire the transition from Summer to Fall home decor.

decorating for fall with moody blooms

Removing any obvious summer motifs is an easy and simple first step. I start by removing coastal and nutical decor along with any lingering patriotic props from earlier in the season. From there you can use some subtle touches, which start leaning into the Autumnal season.

Changing out colors in home interiors is an easy way to transition from one season to another. I’m not talking about redecorating your entire house for the upcoming season, but rather adding accents here and there with colors which lean towards autumnal vibes.

Green is a go to color around here for interior design. Around this time of year deeper and richer greens replace the lighter and brighter greens used during the summertime.

Shades of brown are perfect for the Fall season, and bringing out my brown transferware collection is an easy way to start decorating with darker and moodier tones. Brown glassware is an another go to fall decor around here.

Gold and amber touches pair well with the browns and deep greens, completing a fall palette. The golden hues are reminiscent of wheat and corn fields which are prime fall motifs.

Although I lean towards browns, deeper greens and golds, there are other colors to consider. Deep reds, aubergine, and subtle rust tones are some other lovely options..

Texturess add warmth and coziness to home interiors. These textural touches evoke the feelings of the seasons as the days start to slowly get cooler and darker.

Adding blankets and throws at the ready around your home, adds a layer of homey and comfy. This makes for an inviting home interior during this time of year. Vintage ladders make great blanket displays and baskets coral throws in a stylish manner, while casually draped or stacked pieces look fabulous on an ottoman or bench.

Seasonal pillows are a super easy way to inject timely accents any time of year. Add more pillows during this time of year amping the cozy factor. Pillows with fall motifs adds even more seasonal warmth.

Whether for table top, bedding, window treatments or more, linens are a great way to embrace an upcoming season. Use colors and patterns, which evoke the seasonal feels.

Natural elements are perfect for the harvest season, making wooden accents ideal. Rustic tones lend themselves to the fall season.

Stylish patterns always improve interior design. Using appropriate patterns for the season accentuates trends and freshness in home interiors.

Plaid’s are perfect for the fall season, and incorporating fall leaning colors just amps all the seasonal sensations. Plaid throws, pillows, tablecloths and more evoke the feelings for the season.

“Fall” is coined for the falling leaves. Leaves are the perfect foil for the season in decor, crafts, and entertaining. Natural, faux, paper, fabric leaves can be used in many different ways.

Woods, wood grains, wood barks, etc. all add to the natural and rustic feels of the season. Natural and organic decor is always easy to use with any decor aesthetic, blending into different styles.

Freshly available organics are an easy option for any given season. Fall is full of many traditional options as well as unique selections.

Fresh and faux fruits and vegetables are always great seasonal decor options. Apples and pears are great fruit options, while artichokes, eggplants, a deep cabbages are ideal vegetables, before we reach for the gourds, squashes and pumpkins.

Flowers and floral decor is a popular decorating option whether real, faux, dried or preserved. Using moody blooms in darker and edgier styles add rustic tones for the season. Dried hydrangeas from our yard are a go to option for me every year, but any dried flower really gives the proper air of moodiness.

Every season has it’s own typical natural elements which correspond to the time of year. Before pumpkins and wheat and gourds start popping up there are other elements which can also provide the same effect. Pine cones, feathers, and mushrooms are a great baby step towards the season.

Are you ready for Fall? Fall is my favorite season, and I always welcome it with open arms and enthusiastic anticipation. At the same time, I relish the lazier and longer days of summer, full of family time. The “official” start of Autumn is still over a month away, allowing plenty of time to start with simple tweaks and transition slowly between seasons.

Eventually I will be adding pumpkins, gourds, pine cones, wheat, acorns, etc. throughout our home, but I won’t pull out the Fall big guns until after Labor Day, closer to the true first day of Autumn. I hope these ideas help you transition seamlessly between the seasons. 1. I love the idea of August being the “uneven time”. In many ways it really is a time when things don’t quite fit for the whole month. I love taking time to ease from one season into another and you have some great ideas. I’ve begun that transition, too, but no obvious depictions of autumn until after Labor Day. Have a lovely week.

    1. Thanks Lynne. I’m taking it slow this year and lingering in the summer feels, but Fall is my favorite season. Looking forward to seeing your decor as it transitions. XO- MJ
