How to Decorate an Outdoor Fountain for Christmas

Decorating the outside of our homes is just as important as all the festive decor we sprinkle inside. Today I am sharing how to decorate an outdoor fountain with Christmas cheer. Using garden statuary and lawn ornaments during the winter months for seasonal decor is a great way to stretch their use during the dormant colder months. Please join me as we decorate an outdoor fountain for the Christmas season.

Our fountain is located in the front of our home, which greets all our guests. The sounds of cascading water is a soothing welcome, but by adding festive touches makes it a feast for the eyes as well. When something hits more the one of our senses, the effect is compounded.

We added the water fountain feature to our front sitting area when we remodeled the front yard a few years ago. It’s lovely to hear the cascading water when we sit out front, or when it drifts inside the house when we have the Dutch door open.

The water fountain is pretty all on its own, but with some simple touches it comes alive for the holiday season. So, why a water fountain for Christmas? Why not? The unexpected always brings a magical touch.

Since this water fountain is an outdoor feature, it only seemed prudent to decorate it with natural elements. The fountain sits under an eve and is protected from the elements for the most part, which is helpful for the decor materials. The mild Northern California weather is also helpful.

It’s always a good idea to start with a clean slate at the onset of a new project to clear out the noise, allowing one to focus on the task at hand and start with the upmost clarity.

Bringing all your supplies and decor pieces together helps facilitate the process. Having everything at the ready in one place makes decorating more enjoyable and reduces stress. This way there is no need to stop and search for something. A fresh cedar garland, large pine cones, baubles and a festive bow are assembled.

Form a foundation, creating a bed for all the other pieces to layer. The cedar garland is from Trader Joes, but you can use faux if necessary or even foraged greenery if available in your area. You can find awesome faux greenery here and here.

Adding greenery is a great way to add heft to a basic garland. I have extra branches from our tree and from the tree lot. The branches can be tucked under and in between the foundation garland. The branches can also be tucked between the fountain and the siding. If you need to secure them further, floral wire is always a good alternative.

Shatterproof, outdoor friendly, Christmas baubles add a touch of fun and festive to the otherwise organic arrangement. A faux greenery swag and a plastic finial are added as anchors on each end of the fountain. Both of these were bought at after season deeply discounted sales, which I will be talking about in the next Styled 2 Ways on Monday.

Additional ornaments are scattered to add more pops of festive. Zip ties is an easy way to cluster ornaments and attach to greenery stems. Florist wire or twine is another alternative which works well.

Pine cones add more nature touches on the garland. I use pine cones for home decor frequently and tend to forage for different varieties when we are in woodsy outdoor destinations. If you can’t find pine cones where you live these or these are great choices. A festive ribbon on one end adds a finishing touch. An outdoor water repellent is a good idea for outdoor bows.

Sprinkle decor pieces around the fountain base to complete the scene. This provides a cohesive styling between the Christmas fountain styling and the sitting area location. Galvanized tubs are filled with greenery, pine cones and Christmas baubles to mirror the fountain styling.

The sitting area is decked for the season with festive bow pillows, a gorgeous white poinsettia and a holiday hydrangea arrangement, which has been repurposed over the last few months. These are not items which stay out all the time in the elements. They are brought out for special days only when we have guests or we sit outside enjoying a beverage of choice.

Closing Thoughts

I hope this encourages you to decorate outdoors spaces for Christmas. Beyond a fountain you can decorate urns, troughs, statues, birdbaths and more, dressing them with holiday vibes.

This might not work for everyone, depending on where you live. But if you have milder weather or outdoor covered spaces this is a great way to expand your holiday decorations.
