When creating a decor vignette, the first step is to determine a theme, which defines the mood being set. Since we are talking about using vignettes for Fall decorating today, we have already determined the theme.

Each season has a number of muses and foils to work with to evoke the essence of the time. Fall is chock full of elements which evoke the season. Early fall has apples and pears and feathers and acorns and sunflowers and more. While we move deeper into the Fall season evolving with pumpkins and wheat and gourds and leaves and pine cones and more.

Whatever selection(s) chosen, it’s important to stack, layer and style all the pieces in a cohesive manner. Furthermore, there should be awareness and variation of scale, elevation and textures to provide depth, movement and interest in a decor vignette masterpiece. .

As we start to create a vignette, you want to start with the foundation or bottom layer. The bottom layer is the footprint, if you will, of the decor vignette. This area corrals the decor pieces and provides a stage for the vignette, maintaining its integrity and cohesiveness. From there you build up and around to form the decor scene.

My style preference leans towards the organic, rustic and vintage aesthetics, but whatever your style, the mechanics remain the same. One of the easiest ways to create a vignette is to stack like items in mass. There a few examples of this below.

The footprint can be as small as a tray, whether it’s round, square or rectangular. The tray can add texture to the vignette as well by its material like wood or metal. I love to stack seasonal pieces on repeat, which is super easy.

Baskets are also great vessels to corral seasonal vignettes with tons of texture. I love to pile high seasonal pieces in baskets adding layers of seasonal goodness. Adding ribbons to accent your vignettes adds color, texture and finishing detail.

Wooden bowls like dough bowls or wooden troughs are also full of texture and character. My dough bowl is one of my favorite pieces to dress up with seasonal decor. Organic touches like eucalyptus branches and dried hydrangeas are also a go to accent for me, which soften the look.

Thinking outside the box and using unusual pieces to hold your seasonal vignette immediately adds a great foundation. By adding seasonal Fall decor to a vintage train case a corner of our family immediately lit up. The vignette is carried vertically through the table, carrying the seasonal decor further,

For a greater impact you can incorporate the vignette into an entire cabinet or bookshelf. Vintage brown transfer ware is another favorite around here which sings the Fall melodies so beautifully.

All these Fall decor vignettes are from the Master”pieces” of my Life Library from previous years. New stylings are in the plans and scheduled for the next couple of months. I can’t wait to share!

Keep in mind that there are many other options to corral vignettes from wooden crates to ornamental cages and tool caddies. Vintage pieces always have great patina and provide so much interest to a vignette.

You can create a decor vignette in an entire space in your home or just contain it to a small footprint. Either way it injects seasonal decor notes into your home, which makes it feel fresh, welcoming and loved.

Whether you are evoking a cozy cottage feel or a charming farmhouse vibe or a simplistic modern look, I hope all these ideas provide some inspiration in using vignettes for Fall decorating in your home. It’s my favorite season! I love all things fall.
