Tips & Recommendations About the Cornbread Recipe
Baking Tips
You’ll know the cornbread is done when the edges become browned and pull away from the baking dish. If you insert a toothpick in the center of the baking dish and it comes out clean, it’s a clear indication that the cornbread is done. If the toothpick has batter stuck to it means it needs to bake further.
The Sweet & Savory Pull
The sugar and honey provide sweetness to the cornbread and the finishing sea salt adds a bit of a savory touch. The push and pull of sweet and salty always creates a complex combination. If you’re more of a sweet tooth type omit the salt. Or if you prefer less sweetness simply cut back on the sugar. Either way it’s soft, moist and full of flavor.
Cornbread Alternatives
This basic recipe can be jazzed up with browned butter. Instead of simply melting the butter, you can cook it until it browns (watch it carefully since it can burn easily). Or you can add bacon drippings to the oil measurement to provide another flavor profile. You can also include bacon bits, shredded cheese, chopped jalapeños or fresh corn to add texture and additional flavors. Experiment and have fun.
Presentation Options
If cornbread is baked in a square or rectangular dish, the easiest way to cut it is in squares or rectangles. If prepared in a cast iron skillet, wedges are the best bet. Also muffin tins are a great alternative for automatic individual servings. Regardless of shape, they can be placed on a cake plate or piled high in a bread basket while you watch them disappear!
MJ Cooking Pro Tip
Cornbread is bests when served warm so the provided toppings melt and ooze on top. Think butter, honey, jams, chutneys, cheese and anything that strikes your fancy.

FAQs ~ Cornbread Recipe
Q1. How do I store leftovers?
A1. In the unlikely case you have cornbread left-over, make sure it’s saved in an airtight container. If you have the cornbread under a cake dome, you can leave it for 1-2 days, otherwise place in a sealed zip-loc baggie or Tupperware. It’s not as tender and moist when it’s not fresh, fresh, but pop it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds before eating left-overs.
Q2. Can I freeze cornbread?
A2. Yes- wrapped tightly, cornbread should keep in the freezer for about 3 months. When ready to use, thaw thoroughly (overnight is best) and pop into a 350degree oven to warm up.
Q3. What kind of cornmeal Is best for cornbread?
A3. Either fine or medium ground cornmeal both work well for this cornbread recipe. I use medium-ground as my preference since I like the little bit of texture it provides. Also yellow cornmeal is the most common, but if you have white cornmeal, that’s also fine to use.
