Terra Cotta Inspired Table Styling

Terra cotta pottery is a type of clay with a reddish-brown color, fired at low temperatures and known for its rustic appearance. Terra Cotta is made and used in countries around the globe. Many years ago, in another lifetime, I worked at NorCal Pottery as the Marketing Director, and I could identify which country a terra cotta pot was from by simply looking at it. I don’t know if I still have that super power anymore.

What I do know, is that Italian terra cotta has a high firing temperature relatively speaking, providing classic color and design. While Mexican terra cotta is low fired, providing a very dark and rustic finished product. Asian terra cotta, like from Vietnam for example, lies somewhere in between. Most times this pottery has a white, chalky finish. Well, that’s my quick, cliff note version of terra cotta pottery. Now onto the reason we are here, let’s talk about the terra cotta inspired table scape.

A couple of years ago I set this table {garden party tablescape}, and today I simply expanded on this theme and design, using terra cotta pottery instead. Reusing a decor formula or design model as a spring board is a great way to not reinvent the wheel every time you embark on a new project around your home. If you create something you love, and it really works in your home, use the design concept again and again in different ways.

Like I mentioned above, in my previous life before starting our family, I worked at NorCal Pottery. We were the largest gardening pottery distributor on the West coast at the time. During my tenure there, I curated a collection of gardening pottery and terra cotta was a big category. For example the mini terra cotta pots on top of the plate stacks were samples from our Italian factory. How cute are they? I knew they had to come home with me once we were done with them in the show room. You can see them in other table settings here {a galantine’s mini floral tablescape} and here {last day of summer garden tablescape}.

Not only did I want to use the petite terra cotta plate topper pots, but also a casual assortment of pots create a full garden centerpiece. The final table design is a bit eclectic with a little bit of boho and a little bit of sweetness and a little bit of a rustic touch. All the different layers add interest and texture, but they all serve a purpose as well.

The burlap pieces were actually from a scrapbooking 12×12 stack, but I use them on tables instead. I have a plan to elevate these soon so they will make more of a footprint on special tables like this.

The Mimi Thorisson dinner plates were a Christmas gift this past year, which I’ve shared in several table stylings already. The sweet china accent plates were a thrift store find for this project {thrifted goodies – a patriotic table scape with pretty vintage dishes}.

The copper accents play well with the terra cotta pieces. These copper chargers were my parents and the patina is everything. They usually grace our Thanksgiving tables. The copper votives were great find here {thrifted goodies – insights & inspiration}.

Thrift stores are a great way to build up your table top pieces without spending a fortune. I love the unique appeal they bring to the party, literally and figuratively. The flatware, some glassware and plates are all thrifted in this table design.

Jadeite and green depression glass are two things I love, and when Anthropologie came out with this glassware a few years ago I had to have it! There were a few different colors besides green, white, blue and pink I think. They had them for a few years, which helped me keep my set complete since one broke and now we have a baker’s dozen, just in case.

The mix & mingle of the different terra cotta pots adds plenty of interest and texture. I have curated my terra cotta pots through the years from NorCal Pottery, home improvement centers and some are even from the Dollar Tree. This is a good assorted sizes set and this is a really pretty decorative set.

I used moss & decorative organic balls plus a bunch of our house plants to fill all the terra cotta pots. This is a great centerpiece hack when you don’t have time to get fresh florals or prefer not to spend the money. Simply gather some houseplants and you have an instant organic centerpiece.

And although I used the same concept and model from the garden party table scape design, it’s a very different look and feel to the terra cotta inspired table styling I am sharing today. To give you perspective, here is the garden party table in all it’s glory.

Here is today’s terra cotta table to compare side by side. Same, BUT totally different. See, what I mean? When you create something you love, recreate it in a different way. This way you get more bang for your buck on your creativity bank.

I love how the garden terra cotta table mimics all the freshness outside. I will be planting some containers outside soon and getting outdoor spaces ready to enjoy for the season.
