The RL look appeals to many different spaces from equestrian to western to nautical to Americana and beyond. It’s just not a look, but more of a feel, layering textures, moody hues and curated collectibles.

French country has always spoken to me through many homes from the Pierre Deux years up to today. The French country aesthetic blends rustic farmhouse charm with Parisian elegance, utilizing beautiful textiles, ornate accents and natural elements.

Both aesthetics, the Ralph Lauren and French Country look, blend timeless appeal with a lived-in feel. The use of lush textiles, natural textures, organic elements and elegant accents are blended for inspired living spaces.

MJ Insider Table Styling Tip

Let something that inspires guide you to plan, design and set an intentional and thoughtful table for your family and guests. You don’t necessarily need “themed” tabletop pieces, but rather lean into colors, patterns and textures to evoke the theme. This makes basic dish ware more versatile and extends their worth.

Combining two classic looks like Ralph Lauren and French country design provides an elegant yet understated atmosphere. Pulling design details from both philosophies brings together pieces which parallel each other and also intersect. Let’s look at the details of the table.

The oldest form of theater is the dinner table…

There’s nothing new on this table, but rather I collection of items from around our home that fits the RL and French country look. Lean into the aesthetics which speak to you and chances are you will find amazing pieces in your own home. Stay true to your style, which makes pulling together desired looks effortless.

  • Assorted Silver Tray Charger {thrifted}
  • Open Kitchen Black Bistro Dinner Plate {Williams-Sonoma}
  • Vintage Monogramed White Cotton Napkins {inherited}
  • Assorted Silverware {thrifted}

The plate stack starts and ends with silver pieces, which were all thrifted. You don’t need to spend a fortune to achieve a high end look. The simple ribbon wrapped around the silverware is the only detail which points to the patriotic theme.

The glassware is mismatched with intention. The Ralph Lauren Glen Plaid tumblers have a plaid detail which is iconic for the RL look. Meanwhile the silver rimmed goblets have more of a European scale with the casualness of wine glasses in the French countryside.

  • Ralph Lauren Glen Plaid High Ball Glass {wedding registry}
  • Silver Rimmed Goblet {thrifted}

The place setting retains an air of refinement while remaining relaxed and unassuming. Combining different looks achieves a more relaxed table styling than an impeccably matched setting.

The table is anchored by a blue toile tablecloth as a nod to country French decor, while the red checkered runners have that Americana look which Ralph uses so well. The table is then stacked with vintage books and silver trophies. The flags ground the traditional patriotic theme while the geraniums add the soft romantic atmosphere.

  • Round, Blue Toile Tablecloth {for the life of me can’t remember – maybe Calico Corners?}
  • Red Checker Table Runners {inherited}
  • Vintage Books {thrifted}
  • Assorted Silver Trophy Vases {thrifted}
  • Assorted Flags {collected}
  • White Geraniums {front yard}
  • Silver Bowl {Pottery Barn}

The focal center pieces are eclectic, adding an air of mystery and intention. The books include leather bindings and gold gliding, which work for both aesthetics. A candle always adds ambience.

Surrounding the space with patriotic accents adds to the festive environment. Flags tucked here and there plus using red, white and blue accents grounds the theme. Homespun crafted elements always add a level of personalized style.

A theme whether a holiday, motif or color palette is always a good place to start for a table design. The main theme here is a patriotic table setting, which is influenced by Ralph Lauren design and French country flair. The Americana touches, checks and rustic elements evoke RL feels while the toile, florals and garden setting creates a French Country vibe.

I’m a big proponent of shopping your home first and looking for decor and pieces you can use in unexpected ways. The unexpected always makes for a special touch. I didn’t buy anything new here, just leaned into my stuff and foraged my yard.

Mixing and matching table top pieces allows freedom to play and removes the pressure to follow any set rules. This allows all the mismatched pieces to shine and add charm and character to any table styling. You don’t need to have a matching set of anything to set a thoughtful and pretty table. Here the silverware, glassware and silver accent pieces are all assorted, which add texture and interest to the table setting.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to set a pretty and festive table. You can always find table top pieces at garage sales, thrifts and flea markets. Some of the pieces on this table are thrifted, including the assorted silverware, the silver trophies, the vintage goblets, the vintage books and RL scarf. Thrifted pieces are not only economical but environmental sound, which add character and charm to any table setting.

Creating your own decor and table accents creates a charming homespun atmosphere which is unique and has your personal style. Besides adding character, DIY pieces tend to be more economical than newly bought options. The garden space is peppered with patriotic DIY crafts, which provide a unique look.
