How to Style a Transitional Home Decor Vignette
Are you stuck between the late summer vibes and early fall feels in your home decor? I am. Today I am sharing how I decorated the foyer during this transitional time by leaning into classic decor principles. Homes can remain stylish and comfortable during transitional periods between seasons and major holidays. Please join me as I share a transitional decor vignette, using timeless sensibilities.

The setting for this transitional decor vignette is our foyer, which is one of my favorite spots to appoint in seasonal tones. An entry hallway has the important duty of welcoming guests into a home, and I prefer to have cozy and current decor to greet everyone who comes through the door.

Inspiration for the Transitional Home Decor Vignette
As I mentioned, I am holding onto summer as long as I can. I know Fall, Halloween and even Christmas decor is popping up all over the place, but I’m not ready to bring it into my home just yet. It’s sunny and warm here in Northern California and the limelight hydrangeas are glowing in the back yard. They are some of my favorites flowers, and I had to bring them inside to enjoy. .

The limelight hydrangeas are the star of the show and the driving force for this decor vignette. Always look around your home and use what you have. Using what you have is a sustainable, economical and environmental solution every.single.time. The limelight hydrangeas have started to turn colors on the tips of the petals, which gives a hint and nod to the upcoming season.
How to Create a Timeless Decor Vignette
This process for creating a decorative interior vignette is a therapeutic process for me, but I understand it can be stressful for some folks. I hope this helps or inspires you to create some classic and timeless looks for your own home interior. Decorating your home should be an enjoyable and stress free process.

Select a Location
I picked the bombe chest in the front foyer for the transitional vignette to greet family and friends when they come through the front door and enter our home, setting the tone. How we decorate our foyer or entry-way is super important since this is the first space which greets guests when they enter our home.

Pick a ‘Look” or Theme
Setting a theme or certain look assists in guiding the process. Aspiring for a particular look and setting a certain mood helps in selecting the decor pieces and achieving desired feelings. Seasonal and holiday decor vignettes are easier in this instance, but today we are simply going for a timeless and classic look, transitioning between seasons.

Begin with a Clean Slate
For most projects it’s preferable to start with a clean slate. It clears the mind, getting rid of any “noise” and provides a blank canvas to start creating. Removing everything from the space and giving it a good cleaning is always a good idea. For our particular entryway, surfaces accumulate dirt as we enjoy keeping the dutch door open. A good wipe down was much needed and welcomed, no pun intended.

Create a Foundation and Back Drop
A tray centered on the bombe chest creates a stage of sorts and corrals the decorative elements in an orderly fashion. The tray creates a foundation while the mirror sets the backdrop. Artwork or an architectural piece are other ideas to set a background.

Place the Primary Decor Items
With the foundation and backdrop set, larger decor can be selected and placed. The up cycled urn with the boxwood orb tends to be a staple item on the chest. The green tub vase was selected for the hydrangeas from the backyard, while the tall cloche with the mushroom completes the tall trio. An odd number is used in design to create movement and interest; more on this below.

Add Secondary Accent Pieces
Once the bigger, primary pieces are in place add complimentary accents pieces to round out the display. Notice I added books under the tall cloche for added height. Plus a mini mushroom cloche mirrors the larger mushroom piece with small leather bound books. Lastly an architectural piece in the front adds texture and interest. Add items which speak to you and coordinate with your home interior aesthetic.

Include Finishing Touches
A few extra details add texture and movement to the entire composition. A lace edging garland draped on the mirror, a velvet ribbon tied on the cloche knob and a vintage hanky tucked in the corner are all small details that add a big impact. These final touches are some of my favorite to add.

Tips & Recommendations to Keep In Mind
Shop Your Home First
If you’re a hoarder collector, like I am, then I highly recommend shopping your home first when you create a new decor vignette. Use what you have. Chances are if you own it then you love it, so use it over and over again. Look around and selecte pieces which fit the mood or look you are striving for. Use old pieces in new and unexpected ways. It’s not necessary to buy new things to create new looks. .

Look Outdoors for Inspiration
The great outdoors is always great inspiration. Mother Nature has so much for us to use throughout all the seasons. The hydrangeas from our backyard are on repeat around here this time of year. If you don’t have flowers from your own garden, use branches or pine cones or acorns. Keep you eyes open during nature walks and outdoor outings, you’ll be surprised the things you’ll notice. My family is accustomed to my constant foraging, and happily jump into the game whether it’s driftwood at the beach or pine cones at parks. Please always be respectful of other’s property and follow any rules and regulations posted.

Use the Odd Number Rule of Design
The idea behind the odd number rule is that things arranged in odd numbers are more visually appealing and create more energy. The composition will be more dynamic if there’s an odd number of elements. I included three vintage plates underneath the green floral tub and three books to raise the tall cloche. There are also three large pieces, including the urn, the tub and the cloche plus three small leather bound books. These are also small details, but add to the display dynamic, whether outwardly noticed or not.

Incorpoarte Feng Shui Principles
Your entryway should also include the five Feng Shui elements. While you may have some of these elements already included in your home’s entryway, it’s important to incorporate all five elements so they can work together to create balance and harmony. This is how I represent the elements in my home.

Water:
I usually have fresh cut flowers so I include water in the vase plus we have our water fountain right outside the dutch door that has running water.
Fire:
The lanterns create the fire ambience. A real burning candle or the color red can also be used. Use a gentle hand with this element since you can easily throw off the balance with too much fire.
Earth:
The mushrooms give the organic vibe. The colors brown and tan can also be used here, which included here are a brown area rug and brown leather books.
Metal:
Simply the hardware on your front door will fulfill this need, but I also have included here the metal green tub, the lanterns and skeleton keys.
Wood::
Flooring options and furniture pieces fit this need. Plus if you have plants for Feng Shui purposes and positivity it can play double duty here.
Closing Thoughts
This decor vignette is not running into Fall full force, but rather it’s letting go of summer slowly. A simple display with timeless and classic looks sometimes is all you need. Evergreen decor vignettes help your home feel cozy and welcoming throughout the year regardless of season or holiday.

Keep in mind this is a transitional decor vignette in the sense that it’s transitioning between seasons with neutral feels. A transitional design style is something totally different, which combines traditional and modern sensibilities to. create fresh and contemporary spaces. Although there are parallels between the two, I just wanted to point out the distinction to avoid any confusion.
