How to Repurpose an Indoor Plant Trellis

repurpose indoor plant trellis feature

Shown here are three different heart shaped topiary trellis ideas which are perfect for the Valentine’s Day Holiday. These pretties will become low maintenance perennial decor pieces, which still add natural organic freshness to any space. They are part of the {Rustic and Organic Valentine’s Day Mantel Decor Styling} here at the Masterpiece home.

A trellis is a structure, which supports a climbing or trailing plant. Although they serve practical purposes, trellises can also be decorative as in the instance of these hearts. Trellises can be used inside for house plants, as well as outdoors for a wide variety of vines, trailers and climbing species.

The material used for different trellis options is also varied, including metal, wood, plastic and more. Along with the different materials, trellises also vary in scale depending on the size of the plant it’s supporting.

The main purpose of a trellis is to support a plant and help it grow. Beyond that, trellises can also be decorative, becoming a piece of decor in your home with trailing house plants. This is the variety we will be focusing on here.

A trellis supports and protects plants, as well as creates a focal point. It prevents a plant from spilling out and conserves space while maintaining the health of said plant.

Houseplant trellises and topiaries are favorites around here. I bring them home frequently, but have not cracked the code on keeping the plants viable after a certain amount of time. My regular houseplants fair well under my care, but not the decorative trellis variety. Consequently I decided to repurpose some heart shaped plant trellises, which inspired this project.

When I was getting ready to decorate for Valentine’s Day I was about to visit the local nursery to pick up some trailing plants for these heart forms. Upon further consideration, I realized they would probably end up with the same fate as the original plants, which came on the forms. Instead I opted for another option, keeping these heart shaped trellises around year after year. And here we are.

This is how the heart shaped trellises looked before I repurposed them. The wire heart originally had a common household Ivy plant and actually lasted a bit. The grapevine heart had an angel vine, which dried up. Instead of throwing them out or donating them, I simply gave them a glow up with a new lease on life.

Crafting Pro Tip: As I recommend with any project, read all the instructions through once and then re-read everything again. This way, you are fully prepared and familiar with everything you need, knowing what to expect.

This wire heart shaped form was from Whim House, the home and garden boutique where I worked. Now with some pretty moss accents, it still has the organic fresh feels, but does not require any maintenance.

This grapevine heart was an impulse buy at a local grocery store. It was a super sweet piece while it lasted, but alas all good things come to an end. It came with the little burlap bow, which just remained in place.

This wasn’t necessarily a heart trellis form, but it finished off the set, creating the perfect heart trio. A bunch of these grapevine hearts served as Valentine’s day decorations a few year’s ago.

Although these ideas all used heart shaped trellises, you can adapt the same techniques to any trellis, of any shape. There are round and tall and many different seasonal shapes of trellis options. You could use the same technique in different sizes of the same shaped trellis to create a focal point with a bigger statement. OR, you could use the same technique option on different shaped trellises to form a collection. Style it your way and allow it to fit your aesthetic.

The mini grapevine hearts are from Hobby Lobby a few years ago. They made accent pieces for this tablescape which you see here {A Galantine’s Mini Floral Tablescap}. I will be using the mini heart topiary project for a new Valentine’s Day table, which is coming to the blog soon, just in time for the day of love.
