heart wreath

Hi there!  Today I am sharing how to DIY a heart shaped wreath with some dried roses and mixed mosses.

Although Valentine’s Day is not a huge decorating holiday I do like to add a couple of romantic, sweet touches.  And although this wreath is shaped like a heart it can be used anytime really or if you prefer you could use a round or oval grapevine form if hearts are not your thing.

I have had this heart grapevine form for years, actually decades.  I first added some moss and mini dried rose buds to decorate the wreath when I first got it back in the day like a gazillion years ago.  OK, maybe not a gazillion but like twenty years ago.  

I used it plenty but through the years it faded and lost most of the roses from storing it in the attic, etc. and unfortunately it had grown sad, faded and tired.  I decided it was time to breath some new life into it.

Remember these roses?  I shared how I used them in my {stretching grocery store flowers}post, showing how I used them in my {Christmas mantel} and the {winter greens tablescape} and then I used them in my {winter decor}.  Well, now I am using them to decorate today’s wreath.

I used a hot glue gun and clustered the roses on one area of the heart.  There’s no right or wrong place to put them but rather a personal preference on placement.  I wanted them to be off center so I placed them about two thirds of the way on one side of the heart.  

I clustered 7 roses, wanting an odd number to avoid symmetry.  Odd numbers tend to be best for composition and easier to work with in many creative projects.

I then filled the rest of the heart form with various varieties of moss.  I love moss and you can see the {reindeer moss wreath} I created last year.  I hot glued the mosses to the heart form alternating the colors.  I left the few, old mini rose buds peeking through.  There weren’t many but it added another layer of texture as minimal as it is.  I might be the only one that notices this minuscule detail, but it makes me smile.

Lastly, I sprayed the wreath with a sealing spray to preserve it as long as possible.  Viola!

I love all the textures of the organic elements.  The boldness of the grapevine with the softness of the moss with the sweetness of the roses all mix and play well together.

The heart wreath definitely has a new life now and it’s bringing a bit of sweetness and love to the dining room.  I added a velvet ribbon to give it a last finishing touch.
