Hello friends! Holy week is a few days away and seasonal decorating should be fun and inject festive vibes into your home. Today I am sharing how to layer an Easter decor vignette. Come on in and let me share with you.
I wanted to use our mercury glass pieces for this vignette, and I let these pieces guide me as I layered and built the vignette. It’s always fun to see how it ends up rather than what we envisioned in our minds.
This process is therapeutic and fun for me, but I understand it can be stressful for some folks. I hope this helps or inspires you to create some Easter goodness in your own home to celebrate the season.

Layering an Easter Decorative Vignette
Pick a Place in Your Home
I picked the front foyer for our vignette to greet our family and friends when they come through the front door and enter our home, which sets the tone for the season. How we decorate our foyer or entry-way is super important since this is the first space guests enter. You can read more about that here {how to decorate a spring foyer}.
Select a Theme or “Look”
For this vignette I set out to use our Easter mercury glass pieces. Beyond that I really didn’t have a plan or preference. As I layered the pieces and unpacked the Easter bin I let the decor guide me rather than the other way around.
Start with a Clean Slate
For most projects it’s preferable to start with a clean slate. It clears the mind, getting rid of any “noise” and provides a blank canvas to start creating. I set the vignette on a tray centered on the bombe chest, which corrals most decorative stylings.
Place the Larger Pieces(s) and Focal Point
I started by including the large urn with the boxwood orb, which is usually on the bombe chest plus the etched large glass Easter egg. I found this at Pottery Barn a few years ago and it’s one of my favorite Easter pieces. The egg is placed on a silver stand to give it prominence.
Add Primary Accent Pieces
To compliment the large etched egg I added some other glass egg pieces in a smaller scale. I placed them on the other side of the tray to balance the composition. The addition of the tall cloche with the smaller glass eggs forms a trio on that side of the tray. To make sure the scale of the cloche was correct, I placed it empty at first.
Incorporate Secondary Accent Pieces
Originally, I thought maybe I would incorporate our German glass glitter eggs in the vignette, but the sheet music decoupaged eggs made a better fit. The sheet music eggs seems to be a favorite when I shared {7 ways to DIY Easter eggs} so I was happy to include them. Placed in a glass cloche they create a bit of drama, accented by the tall profile.
Lastly, along came the paper napkin decoupaged eggs in front and center to add a bit of color and texture.
Include Finishing Touches
Once all the main pieces are in place, it’s the small details that elevates the entire vignette. A lace ribbon on the cloche and striped ribbon on the two smaller glass eggs add finishing touches. The cream and black in the ribbon brings in the sheet music color palette, bringing the vignette together.
Crown with a Backdrop Piece if Appropriate
Depending on the setting of your Easter decorative vignette a backdrop might be appropriate. I chose to use a thrifted, vintage frame with sheet music and a bunny silhouette created a few years ago. Hanging on the mirror it ties into the decoupaged sheet music eggs. If your vignette is not against a wall or backdrop don’t worry about this step.
Thoughts About the Layered Decorative Vignette
Many times I follow a tried & true decorative formula, or I have a very definite idea of what I want the vignette to look like. In this instance, I was more free flowing. I started with the mercury glass pieces, but beyond that it was an experiment. And that’s alway fun for me. Don’t be afraid to try different things, experiment, edit and most importantly, have fun.
Odd Number Rule in Design
The idea behind the odd number rule is that things arranged in odd numbers are more visually appealing and create more energy. The composition will be more dynamic if there’s an odd number of elements.
Beyond the obvious three glass eggs, I repeated the black & cream motif three times 1) sheet music decoupaged eggs 2) sheet music bunny print 3) ribbon on glass eggs. I repeated the green fresh floral details three times 1) boxwood orb 2) decoupaged napkin eggs 3) vintage handkerchief. This beautiful hanky was a recent find here (2nd hand shopping at the Great Junk Hunt}, and I knew I wanted to use it right away. That’s why you see it in the vignette from go. ?
Freshly Painted Walls
On somewhat of a side note, do you notice the color of the walls? This is what the foyer looked like last time I shared it with you. The yellowish green walls have been replaced by the gray paint in the foyer and the dining room.
Remember I told you Mr. M decided to paint before the kids came home for spring break? Well, here we are. Now the foyer and the dining room are dressed in “Blackened” by Farrow & Ball. That only leaves the bedrooms hallway and the living room to be painted in gray for the entire house to be cohesive and serene. I’m loving this view.
And the view on the other side of the foyer. Another glass egg sits on the gossip table to tie in the foyer styling. Our monogram gallery wall makes me happy, every time!
I hope you can glean some Easter inspiration from this vignette whether big or small. The weather has been fabulous around here, which has me in super spring mode. Plus the Masterpiece children are both home on spring break. My heart is full now that our home is full again. I have other Easter stylings coming your way now that the painting projects are behind us.
