Inspiration for the Outdoor Decor Vignette

This summer has been incredibly hot, making it hard to fully enjoy our outdoor spaces. Now that the temperatures have started to dip slightly, I have been able to spend more time outside. Consequently, I am hoping that we can spend some time outdoors gathering and mingling. Normally this process would be more beneficial towards the start of the summer season rather than towards to end, but here we are.

Planning for some al fresco dining and outdoor lounging, this spot got some love and a dedicated styling. This space existed before, but was neglected due to a few different reasons. It has been revived and ready to create some magic in our backyard since in Northern California we can extend outdoor living well into late fall and beyond. The San Francisco Bay Area living affords outdoor living to linger longer.

Details on How to Create an Outdoor Decor Styling

This vintage door is always a perfect backdrop for some fun outdoor decorating. I’ve had this vintage door since my days as a vendor at a vintage pop-up. It was a great back drop in my booth space, where I could merchandise hanging pieces from the hook and the handle.

The vintage chippy door has a treatment of Annie Sloan Paris Gray chalk paint, which is heavily distressed plus has also been naturally weathered by the elements on the back patio. I created the “Paris Flower Market” graphic transfer with some elements from the Graphics Fairy. It’s been awhile, but I believe I used the freezer paper method to transfer the image.

The focal point on the vintage door is the grower pot wreath I revived during the summer after too much exposure to the weather. I replaced many of the peat grower pots and added fresh lavender. I used the new bow I shared not too long ago here {a bow tutorial}. You can see how the wreath use to look and how it looks now side by side.

The new peat pots I used were slightly different in shape, size and color to the original ones, which provided great contrast. I also like the touches of lavender with a slight pop of color as opposed to just the moss. I revived the wreath by first removing all the grower pots that had succumbed to the weather and the old burlap ribbon, which had seen better days.

Then I added new peat pots in the empty spots plus moss, filling in all the barren spots. When the composition seemed to be whole again, I added lavender sprigs coming out of all the pots. I used a hot glue gun to adhere all the elements. Once the glue cooled and all the pieces were settled in place I added the new ribbon. Although the ribbon is neutral, it gives the wreath a statement and provides texture and dimension.

Manzanita branches inserted in a vintage European olive bucket creates a tree for all seasons. The added lights bring it to life, creating a touch of magic to the outdoor vignette. It’s super easy to create. The hardest part was securing the branches so they stay in place upright. Rocks, dirt and outdoor fabric contain the branches in place.

All the mechanics are hidden under a bed of Spanish moss at the bottom of the branches. The old tree had the branches buried fully in dirt, which allowed me to plant around them. Although I loved the look, it was messy to maintain, so I’m keeping it simple for now. Maybe next spring I’ll change my mind, but for now it will stay. You can see how this space looked in other seasons at the end of the post.

Twinkle lights of some sort always adds a magic touch to outdoor spaces. Christmas lights wrapped around the Manzanita branches creates a magical glow. It’s so pretty to sit out back and have the lights in the background.

Lanterns, strung lights and candles can add more twinkle magic. All these lights are not only pretty and magical, but they can be mood boosters too. The pretty glow of lights adds an aura of serenity and tranquility,

This is what I call the hardscape of the outdoor styling, which can include planters, plant stands, crates, caddies and more. All these elements provide interest with depth, variation in height plus provide function.

I have a preference for galvanized tubs and zinc containers but there are many different looks to choose from. Terra cotta pots are a classic look and ceramic and glazed planters add a bit of elegance. Choose pieces that fit your home aesthetic and personal style.

Of course outdoor spaces are the perfect place for plants and flowers, but don’t stop there. Include any other nature inspired elements like branches, nests, tree stumps and more. I love to look at nature for inspiration.

This is the piece of the puzzle which is fluid and changes through the seasons as the climate changes. Not only can you change out the plants and flowers depending on the season, but look for the season as a guide. Fall screams pumpkins and corn and burnt foliage, and much more.

With any styling, you want to include elements which add interest and tell the story. Included here are watering cans, a bee skep, a moss floral cone and vine cages, plus more.

These accents can also be fluid depending on the season. You can see here how I kept some of the same summer accents, which I see as perennial, but also added new elements that lend themselves to fall.

Transitioning Outdoor Decor Styling from Summer to Fall

To transition this space for the upcoming months, pine cones, fall foliage, pumpkins and more give the fall feels. The weather has flipped flopped a bit around here from 60-70s back up to 90s so I’m conflicted on how to maintain this space right now. lol.

The garden pot wreath is replaced by a wispy mushroom wreath, signaling the end of summer gardens and moving towards the harvest season.

Fall has so many organic muses to play with. You can use pumpkins, gourds, leaves, pine cones and hay to name a few, but there are too many to name here.

Closing Thoughts with More Stylings

By maximizing outdoor living you stretch your living space. Of course outdoor activities are mostly enjoyed during the summer months, but it does not mean we shouldn’t enjoy them during the other seasons should climates and life styles allow. This is a late summer vignette from the Masterpieces of my Life library, which is slowly transitioning with metal pumpkins.

The addition of a petite Christmas tree and holiday baubles create a magical space towards the holiday season at the end of the year. This was another styling from years past.

This is another outdoor vignette from seasons past before its demise. I’m so happy it’s been revived and it can bring happiness to the backyard patio again.

The outdoor space will get a dress change as the hands of time turn and the seasons march forward. decorating the outside of our homes for the seasons is just as important as the interior spaces.

    1. Thanks so much Lynne. The door was from a neighbor who remodeled years ago. I took it off their hands and frenchified it. It was great as a prop in my booths during my selling days and now I love it in the backyard. Thanks for the visit. XO- MJ

  2. MJ, your outdoor space is so gorgeous. Love how you’ve used the hydrangeas and leaves, and of course that wonderful door. I’ve pinned them all. Happy Fall!

  3. This is a great way of showing how a vignette or a decor area evolves. It doesn’t happen quickly…lol, but this became magic when you added the pumpkins and squash…lovely, thanks for sharing
