This is for all the bubbly lovers out there. I love a good champagne cocktail and mimosas always evoke a celebration or vacation vibe for me. Traditional mimosas use orange juice, but we elevated a classic, using fresh blood orangesinstead. This fresh blood orange mimosa recipe is delicious and a bit more special than regular mimosas with added sparkle and drama.
If I see blood orange in a cocktail or dessert on a menu when we are out, chances are I am ordering it. Mimosas are festive and a favorite around here, but with the addition of blood oranges it elevates it with an extra sparkle. I love the juiciness and freshness of blood oranges and the color is moody adding a bit of drama to your cocktail.
The blood orange has a complex flavor that’s reminiscent of navel oranges, but is more floral and tart, which is probably one of the reasons I like them so much. I am a big tart girl. The flavor of blood oranges is often compared to raspberries, which are also a favorite of mine.
The Inspiration Behind the Blood Orange Mimosa Recipe
Long story short, I love the flavor of blood oranges. I also love the dramatic deep color. One of our local restaurants has a blood orange martini, which I order frequently. Plus an establishment in Napa, CA serves blood orange mimosas, which inspired this recipe. We used are usual mimosa formula, adapting it with fresh blood orange juice.

Tips & Techniques for making a Fresh Blood Orange Mimosa
I recommend juicing your oranges the day before so the juice can chill in the refrigerator over night, making it the perfect temperature to provide the freshest blood orange mimosa the next morning. We squeezed our oranges right before we made the mimosas and although the champagne was chilled we all agreed the drinks could have been chillier.
Also if you’re not a pulp person, which I am not, I recommend straining your juice if you use an electric juicer. We attempted to set the juicer to the low pulp setting, but it didn’t seem to prevent enough pulp for us. A strainer was an easy fix. If you do not own an electric juicer, a hand juicer can easily be used as well.
Anytime you are using bubbles with mixers in a cocktail, I recommend using an average | middle of the road bubbly. Leave the splurge for when you are drinking bubbles alone. You can use any type of sparkling wine or champagne, including Prosecco or Cava. Use what you like, and paired with the fresh blood orange juice, I guarantee it will be an instant favorite!
This recipe should yield around 8 mimosas, but keep in mind different flutes and cocktail glasses have different capacities. It will ultimately depend on the size of the glasses you use. For our champagne flutes it yielded eight glasses easily.
We enjoyed these on Easter Sunday morning before the kids headed back to school. It was a collaborate effort and a fun project to share. Adulting with our kids is full circle, and I highly recommend it. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed it with your people. Salud friends!
