Inspiration Behind the Faux Tin Tile Heart DIY

Over the holidays I used these faux tin tiles from the Dollar Tree to create some gingerbread men. I loved the look, and I knew I would be using them again and again. The vintage vibes the tin tiles provide is everything! I went for a rustic grunge vintage look with this tin heart for Valentine’s Day.

I’m obsessed with how this heart turned out, and I will definitely be using these tiles for more future projects.

How to Create a Faux Tin Tile Heart

There are many steps to this faux tin tile heart DIY, but none of them are necessarily difficult. Aside from the drying time, the project also comes together rather quickly.

Supplies

• Faux Tin Tile
• Wooden Heart Form
• Wooden Dowel
• Antique White Chalk Paint
• Green Acrylic Paint 
• Dark Furniture Wax
• Gold Leaf Rub-n-Buf
• Wood Base
• Reindeer Moss
• Ribbon

Tools

• Sharpie Pen
• Scissors
• Paint Brush
• Foam Brush
• Craft Sanding Block
• Wax Brush
• Rag
• Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue Sticks
• Silicone Finger Protectors

Crafting Pro Tip: As I recommend with all my projects, read all the instructions through once and then re-read everything again. This way, you are familiar with everything you need and know what to expect.

Instructions

• Read instructions thoroughly and assemble all supplies & tools
• Remove all tags and stickers from supplies, including jute twine hanger
• Using wooden heart form as a guide draw heart shape on backside of faux tin tile using sharpie pen
• Cut out heart from tin tile square

• Paint tin tile heart with white chalk paint
• Paint one side of wooden heart with white chalk paint
• Set painted hearts aside, allowing both to full dry

• Once wooden heart is dry, paint other side with green acrylic paint using foam brush
• Paint wooden dowel with white chalk paint

• Once everything is dry, use a craft sanding block to distress and remove some of the paint on the relief pattern of the tin heart

• Dab dark wax around the tin heart with wax brush and wipe excess with rag, creating depth and distressing on the tin heart

• Use rub-n-buf around the heart on some of the raised areas to create more contrast

• Once the heart is distressed to your liking, glue the tin heart to one end of the wooden dowel about a little less than 1/2 way up
• Using hot glue gun, glue the wooden heart to the other side of tin heart with white side on the inside and green side facing out towards the back side

• Hot glue bottom of dowel to wooden base
• Hot glue moss around base to hide where the dowel meets the wood base

• Add bow with ribbon around dowel underneath heart
• Add a ribbon knot on back side to cover hole on wooden heart

Tips & Tricks for the Faux Tin Tile Heart DIY Valentine’s Day Decor

Tin Tile

The peel-n-stick tile from the Dollar Tree is made of plastic and easy to manipulate. Once you cut into the plastic tile the backing falls off hence why you need additional adhesive. A hot glue gun is used here, but other options are probably just as effective. I included the glue gun I use in the shopping section, which has a charging base and drip pad. I love it and highly recommend it.

Distressing Techniques

Distressed and antique patina are preferred finishes around here. I used layers to create an old world look here. Sanding, waxing and gold leaf are all used to give the tile an old weathered look. You can use one, all or none of these techniques, depending on the look you want to achieve. Make it yours! The sanding distresses the piece, while the dark wax ages the tile and the gold detail ties in with my other Milagro pieces.

Color Options

I used Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old White to paint the tin tile heart simply because it’s paint I have on hand. Feel free to use any color you prefer. The green acrylic paint was also on hand, left over from this project. Although green is an unconventional color for Valentine’s Day I want it to coordinate with my Anthropologie Milagro heart. Alternatively, the back can simply be painted white to keep it neutral or maybe either pink or red for a more traditional look for the Valentine’s Day holiday.

Base Choice

I used a trunk stump from a Christmas tree as the base. I’ve had this trunk piece for a few years and used it in different ways for decor. Since it had the hole drilled in the center where the.Christmas pin was inserted at the tree lot, making it perfect for inserting the dowel for this particular project. Foraging at the Christmas tree lot when we pick out our family tree always yields great organic pieces. Get creative with your base.

Back Side

I painted the backside to give the piece a finished look. This way it can be used on a sofa table or in front of a mirror, etc. and when the back is exposed, it still looks nice. The wooden heart I used had a hanging twine so I added the ribbon knot on the back side to simply disguise the hole. Once again, this provides a completed and finished look to the piece.

Closing Thoughts

I hope this little project inspires you to create your own Valentine’s Day decor. You will see more of this faux tin tile heart as I create a styling around it. Do you decorate for Valentine’s Day? I think this tile heart will end up on a Valentine’s Day mantel styling, but time will tell.
