How to Curate Thrifted Finds for Stunning Tablescapes

Thrifts always have stacks of white plates which is a great option for many table settings. Also be on the look out for special looks which appeal to you like transfer-ware, restaurant-ware, delicate porcelain and more. You never know what you will find, but you can never go wrong with white. Plus mixing and matching colors and patterns is always fun and creates a unique look.

Just like dinner plates there’s a plethora of accent plates in many sizes and patterns. This is where I mix and match the most. Small accents pieces whether side dishes, bowls, appetizer plates, etc. are easier to store and can complete a plate stack with different styles. Have fun and find styles which match your aesthetic and compliment your other table top pieces.

When I thrift shop for glassware for table top uses, I look for pieces which speak to me. I am not necessarily looking for “valuable” glassware, but rather unique pieces. In essence I am looking for pieces that are in good condition and are my particular style so they will coordinate with my other table top items. I usually look for at least 6 matching glasses. Since thrifted glassware tends to be reasonable priced, buying anywhere from 6 to 12 glasses does not have to break the bank.

Many thrifts offer utensils for cents. I find many of my pieces for 25 or 50 cents which is incredible. I prefer silver-plate for special tables, but you can find stainless steel, gold plated, different handle materials and more. The silverware is like jewelry for the table and should be as pretty as it is practical. Have fun accenting your tables with special cutlery.

Candles always set the mood at tables and there are so many candlestick options. I have complied a large collection of silver candlesticks plus now brass too and some clear glass pieces. I’ve also seen wood, colored glass, metal and more. I love displaying different profiles and designs to add interest, making it easier to find different options at thrifts. The hunt I half the fun, and compiling an affordable collection is extremely gratifying.

Just like candlesticks, votives add shimmer and ambiance to a table. These copper mercury glass votives are some of my favorite finds, but I’ve also picked up clear and silver mercury glass. There are so many options, which match and compliment so many stylings. You do you, and pick-up whatever speaks to you. Votives are great because they can be tucked around the table and remain low in a centerpiece.

Ahh, linens….so many options! There are table clothes, runners, toppers, napkins and more. I love vintage pieces which add timeless allure to table designs. Just make sure to inspect everything properly for rips and stains. Some stains can be washed out, while others can’t. Same with rips, which can be sewn (if you’re so inclined), while others might prove to be tricky. I have found so many pieces, too many, if I’m being honest, but admitting it is the first step, right?

Thrifts are always full of vase options in so many different styles. Bud vases are great to line down a table or bigger pieces are great for creating stunning center piece arrangements. Even petite little vase containers can be placed at each place setting as a special touch, a party favor or a place card holder. Many vase options tend to be extremely inexpensive.

Stack of plate chargers are usually found at thrifts from folks who might have had a large event and purged the surplus afterwards. All these charger plates can be altered with paint or fabric to create a certain look if you desire. I actually pick up round silver trays when I find them at a good price and use them as chargers. Thinking outside the box creates a signature style for your home and table

Serving platters and bowls can be spendy at regular retailers. I have found some of my favorite pieces at second hand sources and I use them to create a special display when serving the meal. They say we eat with our eyes first, and not only should the food be pretty but the dish it’s presented in should also be special. White server-ware is a always a fantastic option but you can also find some pretty designs and patterns which represent your style.

Salt and pepper shakers are a practical part of the meal, but they can also be pretty. Remember, how the silverware is jewelry for the table? Well S&P is another piece. I have amassed a collection without meaning to, but since I have so many sometimes it’s fun to place a set at every place setting. It a special touch for each guest, but totally not necessary. Just a special set in the middle of the table will do just fine.

Talking about jewelry for the table… napkin rings are the epitome of this. Napkin rings unlike plates and glasses are not really necessary, but add such a great detail, which elevates any table setting. I find napkin rings from anywhere from ten to twenty-five cents. For less than a dollar or two why not dress up your table to the next level?!

Pitchers are great versatile pieces whether big or small. Bigger pieces can be used for their intended use with water or beverage of choice. They also serve double duty as fabulous vases if desired. Small pieces like creamers are great accent pieces for gravies and chutneys or with milk and cream during dessert. Once again you can find pitchers in ceramics or glass or silver, which is a favorite of mine.

Trays have so many great uses, including anchoring a center piece or serving a dish or arranging condiments and beverages. Trays can be used to carry items from the kitchen to the table in style. Trays come in many shapes, sizes and materials, which range in price. There is something for every budget and aesthetic, the hunt is half the fun!

Beverage and ice buckets are great pieces to find at second hand sources. It’s a great item to help guests help themselves and amp the festivity level. They can also be used as a container or decor for centerpieces. Always think outside the box when thrifting. Sometimes pieces speak to you, but you don’t need or necessarily want them for their intended purpose. Make them yours and create a unique display.
