The Buzz on Bees

  •  Bees communicate by dancing
  • The practice of beekeeping dates back at least 4,500 years
  • Bees must gather nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey
  • One bee has to fly about 90,000 miles – three times around the globe – to make one pound of honey
  • The average bee will make only 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime
  • A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour
  • Honey has antiseptic properties and was historically used as a dressing for wounds and a first aid treatment for burns and cuts
  • The natural fruit sugars in honey – fructose and glucose – are quickly digested by the body. This is why sportsmen and athletes use honey to give them a natural energy boost.

The term “busy as a bee” exists for a reason. Bees are associated with industry, teamwork and our ecosystem sustainability. Bees symbolize hard work, productivity, community, and sweetness. They are pretty and practical in the best way possible.

Burlap looks great with greenery, offering so much organic texture. This is a super easy burlap container DIY, creating a unique and custom vessel for flowers and plants. Next time you have a florist vase kicking around don’t donate it, use it for this project instead. Or check out the glass vases at your local thrift where you’re sure to find something for a few dollars.

Floral cone bouquets are pretty simple to put together and are great way to welcome May for May Day, Mother’s Day or any spring celebration. The burlap fabric is adhered to chipboard before rolling it into a cone to give it shape and body. The queen bee theme is carried through the embellishments adding a graphic and a little metal crown.

This table setting is driven by the black and yellow color scheme. The table styling is further complemented with bee containers, a bee skep and bee plates. A bee theme tablescape would not be complete without fresh flowers since it’s the busy bee’s main task to pollinate.

The delicate orchids and honeycomb candles give the table a softer and more relaxed bee vibe. The beeswax candles are the inspiration behind the table, while a vintage vibe surrounds the table like a soft hug. The gingham linens and honeycomb plates complete the scene.

A posset is a deliciously creamy dessert that is super simple to make, but looks more sophisticated than it is. Posset is a British creation, defined as a cold dessert made from thickened cream, typically flavored with lemon. This version is infused with lavender from our garden and the sweetness of honey. Simple yet delicious all at the same time.

The symbolic status of bees dates back to ancient times, associated with wisdom, birth and rebirth and industry. Bees, like fairies, are often considered guardians of the natural world, eternally linked with love, magic and romance. The bee symbol in design represents industry, teamwork, community, and prosperity, rooted in its natural behavior as an industrious pollinator. It is often used to signify sustainability, the “sweetness of life,” and divine wisdom.

World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20th each year. The UN designated May 20th as World Bee Day to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development. The purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem.
