A Fall Styling with an Unexpected Decor Trend

swan fall decor

Did you know swancore is a thing? Well, I’m here to share with you that it is. Swans are having a moment, and I’m all about it. I know fall usually evokes images of pheasants and owls and turkeys, but why not swans? We are equal opportunity feathered friends over here, and I am flipping the script on some fall decor styling.

I was not aware of swancore either until I started researching this post. I, simply, have just been crushing on swans lately. Actually for a few years. It all started when I began coveting a large concrete swan planter. All the swan planters I like are vintage and cost a pretty penny. Then I started to find myself attracted to swans here and there while scrolling and perusing decor, etc.

So… I still haven’t landed the long coveted swan planter, but I have found some treasures in my thrifting adventures. First I found this little piece at a local thrift, which only cost $2. Then I found the larger piece at the Hospice shop vintage sale a couple of weeks ago, which I mentioned here {Setting a Thrifted Fall Garden Table}. I spied it while they were setting up, but it was not available for purchase yet.

When I went to the sale I told myself I would only buy it if it was less than $20. I was able to get my hands on it, between the rush of customers attending the sale, and lo and behold, the pretty was priced only at $11. I was pleasantly surprised since like I mentioned in the previous thrifting post, the prices were pretty spicy in general, but that’s a topic for another post coming later in the week.

So, what is the swancore decor trend? Apparently it’s a thing in 2024? Who knew? Swan-themed accents are all the rage. I’m not about to run out and start buying pillows with swans or dishes or whatever. But if I do find a vintage decor cutie in my travels, here and there, chances are it comes home with me. Swans symbolize beauty, grace, and tranquility. Their long neck silhouettes are easy identifiable, and with their white feathers bring an aura of elegance and sophistication to a space. And here we are.

Like with any project, it’s best to start with a blank slate and build layers from there. I gave the chest and tray a good cleaning. From there I layered pieces. I started with the swans and used vintage books as risers to give them height. The height is necessary since the thrifted, up-cycled urn that usually hangs out here is fairly tall in comparison. I also like the feel of the rustic lanterns with the gilded mirror and French bombe chest.

The foyer is one of the first spots I like to decorate seasonally. It keeps the space fresh and current, greeting our guests as they enter our home. This fall styling has many of the quintessential motifs like pumpkins and acorns and feathers, but, then, then… I added my new to me, thrifted swans. It’s an unexpected touch and adds SO much interest.

I decorated the swans with fall decor to embrace the season and bring them along to the party. The small cream ceramic swan is filled with acorns, while the larger porcelain swan is full of turkey feathers. So although the swans are not necessarily “Fall” evoking pieces, by adding the autumnal fillers they immediately compliment the Fall styling. A small Lenox dish, also thrifted by the way, is full of mini pine cones to complete a set of three arrangement.

I included pumpkins, feathers, and acorns to reinforce the fall theme, but the swans are the stars of the show. It’s a very unexpected and unusual choice for Fall decor but with the autumnal accents they get the job done. The autumn themed accents are critical in establishing the Fall vignette and the swans just elevate it in another direction.

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to decor for your own home. These swans make me so happy and that’s all that matters. I know I said swans are trending right now, and I read a few articles to that effect, but that’s not why I’m using them today. For whatever reason, I am crushing on swans and that’s why they ended up here.

I guess it’s a circular equation. Since I have probably seen them more often because they have become popular, they have appealed to me more. Either way I hope to run into more of these beauties out in the wild, although I already scoured my usual on-line vintage haunts. The thing is, part of the fun is to score them at reasonable prices. What I found on-line is higher than I’m willing to go at the moment. And so the dance begins.

And although I have seen and liked many swans I seem to be partial to the ones that are also a bowl or container or planter of some sort. I’m looking forward to dressing these up during the year for the different seasons and holidays. I can’t wait to use them with greenery and plants.

Are you digging the Swancore movement? Now that I have become aware of it, I actually see swan fixtures and tiles and textiles. Much of it is not necessarily my jam, but I do realize swans have a rich history in design. Swans are primarily associated with 20th-century design and movements like Art Nouveau and Art Deco, and of course there’s also Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet, Swan Lake in the late 1800s. Do you own any swans? Do you care for the swan movement? Let me know in the comments below. I’m so intrigued by it all.

  1. Love the swans and the feathers, MaryJo. Makes for a lovely neutral color palate. Had no idea swans were a “thing” right now. I’ll have to look through my stash and see what’s there. LOL. Great scores on the swans. Have a lovely week.

  2. Fun post! We had a pair of crystal swans on our wedding cake and I’m pretty sure I have some porcelain ones too somewhere. I’ll have to dig them out!

  3. No idea about the swans. I think I have a tiny one. I like the gold touches on yours. Speaking of coveting. I want a big urn. First dibbs on yours ! Several years ago I was in GoodWill and a young woman had a huge urn in her cart for $6.99. I haven’t been so crushed thriftiing since this silly person thought the handmade Chinese clay tea pots with leaves on twine in her position were “cute” The two she left behind were broken- like my heart.
If you gave 25 women the same box of “stuff” I think they would all create something lovely and different.

    1. Thanks Myrna. Yes, that’s so true. That’s why it’s wonderful to share all our ideas and see everyone’s point of view. Ugh, seeing something you want in someone else’s cart is never fun. Sorry friend. XO- MJ

  4. I had a swan collection back when I was actively buying and selling and if I remember right they started their popularity during the 40’s. Some are really beautiful. Birds of all kinds should be popular throughout the seasons. Right now I’m being overrun with geese… still. Lovely vignette and I love all kinds of birds for fall.

    1. Oh Debra, I’m sure your swan collection was amazing. The lady in line at the thrift shop said my big one look like one her mom had in the 50s. It doesn’t have markings on the bottom so I haven’t researched it yet. The little guy is 1987 according to the stamp. Yes, I love all birds too. XO- MJ

    1. I’m hoping that mine grows too. I’m loving them. I have my eye on a few online but the shipping kills me and has kept me at bay. I’m so glad you like them. I know you have a few. We always seem to like the same things. XO- MJ

  5. What a lovely addition to fall decor. Those swans are so pretty. I love the feathers, too. Thank you for sharing this post with us at the Will Blog for Comments #48 linkup this week. We hope you’ll share more at #49–it opens Monday. 🙂

  6. Hi friend! I bought a beautiful Lenox swan at a yard sale last year and last weekend we went to “Fall in the Field” to buy pumpkins for our front porch, and guess what I scored at one of the booths? A ceramic swan bowl similar to yours! Great minds, lol! I’ve also been searching for a planter for over a year with no luck! Yours are so pretty! I have not heard the term swancore but I’m not surprised it’s a thing!

    1. Oh lucky!!! I’ve seen a few Lenox swans online I have my eye on but I refuse to pay shippping. lol. Can’t wait to see yours styled in your beautiful home. XO- MJ

  7. Seems I found your post at an auspicious moment with fall around the corner! I love how you’ve styled your entry — it would encourage guests to linger there, whether coming or going. I’ve had a couple of swan items for a number of years, but they’re decorated with spring flowers so I will have to wait ’til spring to see how they’d work in my foyer.
