styling a vintage bread box with all the Christmas feels

Christmas styling in a vintage bread box

I am using a metal bread box I found thrifting many moons ago to set the stage for a Christmastime vignette. I use said box during the summertime for my container gardens, but during the winter it sits neglected. Not anymore! Come see how I created this fun vintage inspired Christmas vignette.

inspiration behind the Christmas vintage bread box styling

First, I would like to thank Lora Bloomquist from Create & Ponder for the inspiration. A few weeks ago she shared an {easy DIY vintage tool box Christmas decor}, which I featured at our {Home Imagined Link Party #32}. Not only did I love Lora’s post to feature it at the party, but it inspired me to create my own vignette.

It got me thinking how I love to use this vintage bread box during the warm months for my container gardening, why not for a Christmas, wintery setting?

Although I do love it spilling out with blooms, I am loving the bread box in it’s new winter dress.

how to add layers to achieve the Christmas styling

For any styling or decor project like this, I like to start with a blank slate.?It helps to start off with clarity and not be obstructed by what I call excess noise.

The bread box has become pretty grungy and rusted through all the years it’s been outside.?I wiped it down and cleaned it for it’s next assignment.?

The bottom of the box is pretty rusted and actually has a couple of small holes in one corner.?I added a towel at the bottom as protection plus included some thrifted vintage books on top of the towel as risers.

The books provide added height so the decor accents can be seen above the edge of the box.

I started by adding this plaid ribbon bow on the corner of the boxes’ lid.?This plaid ribbon was a great after season score a couple of years ago.?You can see how I used it here {winter wonderland on a tray} and here {a plaid holiday table}.??

To offset the plaid bow I added real and faux greenery and frosty pine cone stems angled towards the opposite corner.?Plus I draped a vintage Christmas linen I found at a flea market a few years ago towards the front.?

Then I added decorative baubles to fill the space.?A large pine cone, a rusty sleigh bell and a plaid candle holder made their way into the vignette.?

At this point is when I take a step back and look at the entire composition to see how it looks and the feelings it evokes.?

My first thought was the space below the bow looked too bare.?I also wanted some type of graphic element so my wheels started spinning.

While I was in the garage, looking for something else, I stumbled on my stack of Christmas books.?Viola!?Just what I needed.??

In the garage I also found the rust jingle bell garland , which I thought tied in well with the large rusty jingle bell and the rusty bread box.?I crowned the vignette by setting the garland on top of everything.

I added a simple wreath as a backdrop for the styling.

The Christmas vintage bread box styling sits on the fairly new refurbished dresser on the back patio {an old, shabby dresser refurbished into an outdoor sideboard}.?

It’s a favorite spot of mine to style and the weather here in Northern California has been super nice, allowing for outdoor play.?The last edit I made was adding the plaid pillow on the chair.

Thanks again to Lora. She’s always an inspiration and my vintage loving heart adores everything she does. She also inspired me to create this vintage train case last year with all the fall feels.

  1. I LOVE THIS!!! Lora shares the most AMAZING ideas but, MJ, you did such a lovely job of using that super cool bread box for a Christmas display!! Brilliant use of all kinds of pretty old things 🙂 LOVE!!

  2. Nailed it! I love everything about this vignette MaryJo! I especially love the trip down memory lane… my mom had this set when I was growing up. I have seen it has really become popular again. I like the way it is faded, and that ribbon? Oh my! I really need to see more ribbon in my life here because it is always the finishing touch.
