pedestal plates & pumpkins table

As I mentioned in my previous post, we won’t be traveling to South Carolina to visit my father-in-law over Thanksgiving.

I’m sad about it, mostly for the kids who wanted to see grandpa, but we always have a festive Thanksgiving at home as well.

SO after not thinking I had to think about thanksgiving, now I’ve switched gears & I’m in full Thanksgiving thinking  mode.

So I’ve been wanting to do a tablescape using my pedestal plates for awhile now so I thought I would try it with pumpkins.

I didn’t want to buy anything new so I shopped my house.

Of course I started with the pedestal plates.  These are super easy to make and I’m sure there are tutorials all over blog land.  I sold quite a few in my Etsy shop & in my booth during my consigning days.

I pick up vintage plates & candle sticks while shopping at thrift shops, garage sales, flea markets etc. and simply adhere them w/ E6000 adhesive.  this is very important!  I experimented w/ different adhesives & this is by far the winner.  These pedestal plates should only be hand washed and the bond works like a charm.

back to the table.

I started by placing the pedestal plates on the grain sack I use as a table runner.  This gave me a footprint to work with.

The reason I wanted to use pedestal plates for this is because I have different heights to work with.  These are super affordable to make if you don’t have a collection of cake plates & pedestals to work with.  The adhesive will be the most expensive part.  Really.

Next I collected all the pumpkins from around the house and started placing them here and there.  This is where you play with the placement of the plates depending on the different heights & how wide|fat certain pumpkins are.

For the smaller pumpkins that are not on a pedestal plate I used trunk rounds to give them more presence.

I got these last year when we got our Christmas tree.  When the guy was trimming our trunk I asked him if I could keep the rounds & he not only gave me the rounds from our tree but he showed me the overflowing bin from other trees.  The kids & I went to town along with green tree trimmings I use to decorate around the house for the season.  The kids are always like there goes mom taking trash & junk home. LOL.

It never hurts to ask.  They’re actually very happy that you haul the stuff away.

I added some acorns around the pumpkins for texture & my collection of silver plate candlesticks for ambiance.

I took a step back & liked it but felt like it was missing more.

I didn’t want to buy anything so I looked around the house.

I added my dried hydrangeas from the summer.

I took a step back and wasn’t crazy about it either.

So i took the hydrangeas away and liked it.

By adding the hydrangeas it gave me perspective and I realized sometimes less is more.

This isn’t necessarily my Thanksgiving tablescape, but it was an exercise in using pedestal plates for this purpose and to inspire me for Thanksgiving.

It helps me visualize.

It helps me become aware of what I like & don’t like.

It helps me realize what works and what doesn’t.
