oilcloth plate chargers DIY

Last week I showed you these oilcloth chargers in this table styling {a pink floral tablescape with DIY oilcloth chargers}. And although I chose this pink cherry blossoms pattern for my chargers, you can use any pattern, color, design for your own chargers. That’s the best part. The project can fit anybody’s aesthetic and design style.

what is oilcloth?

Oilcloth is a poly-cotton material, which is printed and treated on one side with a waterproof coating. It was originally popular in the 1950’s, which gives it a total retro vibe.

The waterproofing makes it super easy to wipe down, which is one of the reasons I like it for this plate charger project. Its high density also makes it strong and durable, which is another plus. It comes by the yard or as table cloths in many sizes and shapes.

how to make your own oilcloth plate chargers

Like I said before, this is a super easy DIY, which is very similar to other techniques I have used in the past. You can see all the other ways to DIY your own chargers at the end of this post.

Cut a square of oilcloth for each charger slightly larger than the round charger (approximately 1/2-1 inch).

One by one, spray adhesive on top of charger and adhere an oilcloth square, making sure to apply the glue liberally in the plate indentation.

Press oilcloth securely onto charger, ironing any wrinkles out with your fingers.

Make sure to press firmly in the plate indentation on the charger to make the oilcloth fit snuggly.

Once the oilcloth is adhered properly to the charger, use the scissors to trim carefully and flush to the edges.

benefits of oilcloth plate chargers

Since oilcloth is a waterproof material these charger plates are super easy to wipe down and wipe clean. There is no worry about food or other spills since they won’t seep into the charger. Also it’s a great option to use outdoors since it’s a durable material.

Oilcloth, whether bought by the yard or as a tablecloth is reasonably priced. I used a 45-in square table cloth for this project, since we sell them @ Whim House. This tablecloth size can yield upto 8 charger plates. This is the pattern I used. But remember there are many different styles to select from, making them customizable to your own personal style.

I purchased the plastic chargers at the Dollar Tree, so overall this is a fairly inexpensive project. I actually have another charger DIY project coming your way soon with all the Fall feels. Stay tuned.
