A Little About Vintage Milk Glass

Milk Glass is a popular type of collectible glassware also known as Opaque Glass or Opal Glass. The most popular color is white hence the “milk” glass name, but milk glass comes in an array of colors. Milk glass is believed to have been made as early as the 1500s in Venice, Italy. In the USA it was produced as early as 1850s.

Thrifts are a great resource for vintage milk glass. Some pieces can be found in the wild for reasonable prices although prices have seen a surge. Thrifting has become a thing, which has caused particular items to become spendy. Depending on the thrift destination, milk glass can still be found at reasonable prices, while other spots not so much. Keep your eye out, since vintage milk glass is a fabulous collectible.

Thrifting Pro Tip: Always have a list of items you are looking for and interested in along with any pertinent measurements for said items. Add the list to your notes in your phone so you always have the list with you.

Ways to Use Thrifted Vintage Milk Glass for St. Patrick’s Day Decor

Green is a favorite color of mine so decorating for the St. Patrick’s Day holiday is easy and fun. When green is paired with charming vintage milk glass pieces it makes for fresh and crisp St. Paddy’s decor.

Green Florals

Green flowers paired with milk glass make for super fresh and natural decor. Fresh, faux or dried floral options can all be used creating similar St. Patrick’s Day vibes. Bells of Ireland are favorite stems of mine and perfect for the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

Any green flower will do though. You will see throughout this post I used not only Bells of Ireland, but also green mums and green dragon aster. Green is the name of the game here.

Green Accents

Even easier than using florals, simply pair the beautiful white milk glass with green accents. Look around your home and look for green pieces and create a pretty vignette mixing and matching the green pieces with the white milk glass. look for green bottles and vases, or green books or any green decor pieces.

You’ll be surprised how many green items you can find in your home without having to buy anything new. When you start decorating for a new seasons and | or holiday, I recommend always shop your home first.

Green Baubles

Use green baubles and bowl fillers to decorate your milk glass vessels. Moss, green beads, and even green Christmas ornaments are fabulous options.

All these different elements add texture and interest to the sleek milk glass pieces.

Green Linens

Adding linens to decor vignettes always adds texture. By including linens with green accents you can inject color and texture into a St. Patrick’s day vignette.

The checked green and white napkin pictured above was also a thrifted find. It was sitting all alone on the shelf with no brothers or sisters to keep her company. Napkins usually come in sets, but it caught my eye as an accent piece not for tabletop use. It was priced at $1 probably because it was all alone. Look at napkins and hankies and small linens as accent pieces in your color and style to add a little extra to your decor.

Green Ribbons

Ribbons are a super easy way to add a classic detail to decor stylings. By tying or wrapping a green ribbon around a milk glass vase or bowl or handle immediately dresses the item for St. Patrick’s Day.

Ribbons give that finishing touch to stylings in a subtle way. Whether tied in a bow or a simple knot or draped simply, they add texture and interest in a very understated manner.

Milk Glass Lends Itself to Decor all Year Round

Simple & Neutral

White milk glass has a beautiful finish, which although neutral is not boring. The neutral color palette lends itself to simple decor, which can be amped up and elevated depending on what it is paired with.

Seasonal

Vintage milk glass is the perfect foil to showcase seasonal touches. Pairing thrifted milk glass pieces with organic elements is a fresh and easy way to decorate throughout the year. In the spring time fresh lavender not only looks beautiful but also smells heavenly.

Moving on to summertime, sea shells and other sea form give all the bright and coastal vibes to vintage milk glass pieces.

When we head into fall and winter time, simple pine cones add the cozy seasonal feels. Pine cones can be easily foraged in nature walks, parks and even your own yards, making it a super fresh and economical way to decorate.

Look towards natural and organic elements for any given season and chances are it will look beautiful with vintage milk glass.

Holidays

Other colorful accents beyond green look fabulous for any given holiday. American flags tucked in milk glass vases make a perfect Patriotic decor vignette.

Sweet treats with red accents are perfect for the Valentine’s romantic holiday.
