How to Decorate a Christmas Birdbath
Decorating the outside of our homes is just as important as all the festive decor we sprinkle inside. Today I am sharing how to decorate a birdbath with Christmas cheer.

Using garden statuary and lawn ornaments during the winter months for seasonal decor is a great way to stretch their use during the dormant colder months.

Why a Birdbath?
We added a birdbath focal point to our front yard when we remodeled {more front yard design details}. We love to have feathered friends visit, but it is also fun to decorate the birdbath for the seasons.
We found this vintage birdbath in Eugene, Oregon at an Antique mall but there’s also this more simple birdbath or this more ornate version if you are looking for one.
Seasonal Decor for the Garden Birdbath
I shared how the birdbath was decorated for Thanksgiving last year in this post {Thanksgiving Welcome Ideas} and for Halloween this year in this post {It’s in the Details Halloween Outdoor Decor}. Today I’ll show you how I decorate the birdbath for the holiday season.

How to Decorate a Birdbath for Christmas
Start with a Blank Slate
Strip the birdbath of any decor it might have already had, plus clean it so it’s ready for its seasonal party dress. It’s always a good idea to start with a clean slate at the onset of a new project to clear out the noise, allowing one to focus on the task at hand..

Assemble Supplies
Bringing all your supplies and decor pieces together helps facilitate the process. Having everything at the ready in one place makes decorating the birdbath more enjoyable and reduces stress. This way there is no need to stop and search for something. I used fresh greenery branches, pine cones, naturally dried hydrangeas and plastic baubles to decorate our statuary birdbath..

Create a Foundation
Form a foundation on the birdbath basin by laying down greenery branches, creating a bed for all the other pieces. We use a fresh Christmas tree, and Mr. M trims it as he strings the lights, which provides branches for decor. If you don’t have fresh greenery, you can find great faux greenery here and here.

Build First Layer
Next lay large sized pine cones on the greenery. I use pine cones for home decor frequently and tend to forage for different varieties when we are in woodsy outdoor destinations. If you can’t find pine cones where you live these or these are great choices.

Add Florals
Tuck floral stems around the birdbath, nestling the stems under the greenery to secure them in place. We have several hydrangea bushes in a few different varieties and hydrangeas are on repeat around here, whether fresh or dry, or inside or outside. Here is a resource for faux hydrangeas for your convenience.

Top with Baubles
Fill in the rest of the arrangement with ornaments around the bed of greenery in between the pine cones and flowers, finishing off the display. I used plastic ornaments that are nor fragile or breakable, making them outdoor friendly.

Don’t Forget the Surroundings
Sprinkle decor pieces around the birdbath base. This provides a cohesive styling between the Christmas birdbath and the location.
Tips & Tricks About the Christmas Birdbath
Most of the organic items I used on this project were foraged one way or another. If you buy a fresh Christmas tree always check the garbage bins for excess greenery at the tree lot. I always ask before I take anything, and they are happy for me to haul some branches away.

The hydrangeas are from our backyard, which dry naturally. The pine cones I have foraged through the years from different parks, nature walks, etc. The baubles are the only pieces purchased and the ornaments are from the Dollar Tree while the finials are from Hobby Lobby. These are a great alternative.
Closing Thoughts
I hope this encourages you to decorate garden statuary for Christmas. Beyond a birdbath you can decorate urns, troughs, statues and more, dressing them with holiday vibes.

There’s slightly less than seven weeks left until Christmas. So much to do, and so little time. Join me for more seasonal inspiration delivered directly to your in box.

Hello Mary Jo,
I love how you turned your birdbath into holiday decor! Such a great idea. I am pinning it for later. Have a wonderful week.

What a fabulous way to highlight a feature like a birdbath or maybe an urn! You’re giving me lots of ideas for improving our front porch! Thank you MaryJo, pinning for later!
Thanks so much Michelle! I’m so glad it gave you ideas. Happy almost Holidays! XO- MJ
I love your birdbath decor MaryJo! I love it when the outside is just as festive as the inside too. I had plans of decorating our rock garden, but it keeps getting pushed to the backburner this year. I just wish our yard looked as good as yours. We did not get the rain this past summer here, and everyone’s grass died, brown nearly all summer long. It’s odd since it has never happened here, brown spots maybe, but not entire yards. Yuck! Fingers crossed for a good summer next year, hope you are doing well friend.
Thanks so much Cara. Yeah the birdbath has become a fun piece to style thru the seasons. I hear ya about the dead grass. Have you seen pictures of our back yard? Well it’s all dead. I’m so self conscious when I create posts in the back. But Mr apparently has a plan. He stopped watering it since it was crazy hot this summer and plans to reseed this winter when we get the rain. Time will tell. Thanks for the visit. XO- MJ
I was just thinking about this. One year I bought giant red ornaments from Dollar Tree. I never get a real tree because it’s so hot here. But- I would get the free tree clippings, bring them home to make the house smell good. Then I would say “Every Christmas I have the worst upper respiratory infection”
I have asthma and allergies. I was so allergic to those fresh branches ! Not a problem. Down by the street, they can’t tell they are artificial.
Oh no!! There’s so many great faux greenery. Think this year I’m going to by an artificial one for the mantel. Sometimes it’s just easier. XO- MJ
Golly, we get so much wind here in suburban Chicagoland, I would have to start with a mesh base over the birdbath…but, I really love the idea…I will have to try a few options…Bricks…LOL. from Pitstop, Sandi
Yes. lol. Weather is definetly a consideration. Sometimes some things get blown here too and we have a ton of rain. That’s why I always use outdoor friendly elements and if they are ruined I know it’s part of the deal. Thnx for stopping by. XO- MJ
