MaryJo behind the blog

To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN designated May 20th as World Bee Day. May 20th is marked as world bee day because it coincides with the birthday of Anton Janša, a pioneer beekeeper from Slovenia born in 1734. On that note, I’m kicking off the month of May sharing the iconic bee symbol for some Queen Bee goodness in our homes.

iconic bee symbol

Bees are an iconic symbol in today’s world, and there’s no denying the French bee motif has an important impact on design. These fashionable fliers are suited to help nurture our environment as highly efficient pollinators, and their profile is also well known throughout history and design.

Floral Cone Bouquet

The month always kicks off with May Day. A sweet floral cone with the iconic bee design is the perfect way to decorate your porch or patio and of course the prefect token to gift a friend or a mother on Mother’s Day! The Napoleonic Bee is a Symbol of French industry. There’s no creature more industrious than our pollinator bee friends.

Burlap Bee Container

This container can be used in so many ways. I used it as a cache pot for a flowering potted plant on this table design. It can also be used as a vase for pretty blooms. It would also be fantastic as a canister on the counter in a kitchen or bathroom. The possibilities are endless and it brings that idyllic Napoleonic Bee design aesthetic to any space.

Honeycomb Beeswax Candles DIY

These beeswax candles are a super easy DIY. I love all the texture and organic feels they bring to a setting. This is the kit I used to create my candles, and I am not kidding when I tell you they are super e.a.s.y to make.

A Honeycomb Cheesy Cracker Appetizer

The honeycomb is a delicious indulgence, which paired with these cheesy crackers makes for a decadent treat. This is always a crowd pleaser and a little goes along way since it’s a very flavor rich treat.

Lavender Honey Posset Recipe

This has easily become one of my favorite desserts for many reasons. It’s a simple make ahead dessert, but its flavor and texture is nothing but simple. Using honey as the sweetener is my preference and adds a great flavor profile.

Honey Ginger Champagne Mule Cocktail

Honeycomb is also used in this pretty drink with a twist on the traditional Mule cocktail. Between the sweetness of the honey and the spiciness of the ginger, which is all topped off with the bubbles, it makes for a very complex depth of flavor.

This is the honeycomb I use for my recipes since it can be hard to find in some areas.

Bee Inspired Tablescape

All this food and drink should be shared on a pretty table. Here’s a table design honoring the fabulous bee.The bee has been a vital symbol of French industry and one of the most prominent emblems of the French Revolution. Even today, the bee emblem is used on French glassware, cutlery, linens upholstery fabric and even on cosmetic brands.

An Orchid and Beeswax Candle DIY Tablescape

The beeswax candles were the inspiration for this table styling. The colors and shapes bring this tablet together in a very eclectic manner. Playing with tables is a great creative outlet, which elevates any occasion.

Whenever we spend time in the vegetable garden we are joined by busy bees. They never bother us although we can see, hear and feel them all around us. It only seemed fitting to set a pretty vignette in their honor.

Besides making our homes cozy and pretty, there are things we can do to promote the well being of bees, which are essential to our well being as a society. World Bee Day exists to educate people about the importance of bees, and how they can help preserve them for the sake of the future.

There are simple things we can do; for instance making a bee water fountain by leaving a water bowl outside. Did you know you can also sponsor a hive? Plus planting plants and flowers helps our buzzing friends. These are small things compared to the vital necessity bees bring to the planet ecosystems.
