This DIY faux gingerbread snowflake wreath is incredibly festive in an understated way. The wreath is winter inspired, which can be displayed past the Christmas holiday into the New Year without missing a beat.

Inspiration for the Faux Gingerbread Snowflake Wreath DIY

With some simple and affordable supplies, you can pull this wreath project together. The wooden snowflake pieces are from the Dollar Tree while the grapevine wreath form cost about $5 at Hobby Lobby. Put them together with some paint and it creates an incredible wreath decor piece. I love the layered textures of the piece with the homespun charm gingerbread always brings to the party.

How To Make a Faux Gingerbread Snowflake Wreath

Supplies

• Grapevine Wreath Form
• Assorted Wooden Snowflake Shapes
• White Chalk Paint
• Warm Caramel Spray Paint
• Puffy White Paint
• Faux Greenery
• Spray Adhesive
• Artificial Snow

Tools

• Paint Brush
• Hot Glue Gun & Glue Gun Glue Sticks
• Ribbon Bow (optional)

Crafting Pro Tip: As I recommend with all my projects, read all the instructions through once and then re-read everything again. This way, you are familiar with everything you need and know what to expect.

Instructions

• Read instructions thoroughly and assemble all supplies & tools
• Using paint brush, apply a light layer of white chalk paint on wreath form to create a snow dusting look
• Set wreath aside to dry

• Remove snowflakes from packaging and cut off any twine, etc.
• Spray paint all the wood snowflakes using Warm Carmel paint
• Set snowflakes aside and allow to dry fully

• Using puffy white paint apply snowflake decorations on all the wooden shapes once caramel paint has fully dried
• Set snowflakes aside and allow to cure fully (overnight is highly recommended)

• Separate greenery leaves from stems
• Once the wreath form is dry use glue gun to adhere the faux greenery leaves sparingly around wreath

• Once snowflakes’ decorations are all fully dry and can be manipulated, place all the snowflakes around the wreath form overlapping each other
• Play around with the snowflakes until you reach the desired composition
• Using hot glue gun adhere snowflakes onto wreath and each other until all the flakes are adhered secularly

• Apply spray adhesive on wreath and sprinkle artificial snow over it working in sections, going all the way around wreath

• Form a ribbon bow following this tutorial and attach to wreath using floral wire (optional)
• Voila! Hang your faux gingerbread snowflake wreath and enjoy it through to the end of winter

Tips & Tricks in Creating the Faux Snowflake Wreath

About the Snowflakes

There’s a variety of snowflake shapes and sizes. The larger pieces came in a mini garland of 4 each with two different patterns. The smaller pieces came in packs of eight and are all the same. I used two garlands (one of each shape) and two packs of the smaller flakes, totaling 24 snowflakes all together. The variety adds interest around the wreath.

We’ve heard the term, “no two snowflakes are alike” so I created different patterns on each snowflake. In order to not get stuck in a rut and keep creativity fresh, I applied the puffy paint on the snowflakes in batches. I think only two of the flakes ended being the same, which is not noticeable with the total number of snowflakes.

The puffy paint takes quite a bit time to fully cure so be patient and allow it to harden before you handle it. Since you are layering the snowflakes you don’t want to disturb the paint, while it’s setting and ruin your artistic efforts.

Pivot and Let Creativity Guide You

I decided to add the greenery when I laid the snowflakes on the wreath and felt it was a bit flat and drab. I had this greenery on hand also from the Dollar Tree, and I like how it has a snowy effect on it so it blended in with the theme, The greenery added another dimension and a slight pop of color which made the snowflakes stand out more. Do not be afraid to pivot when you are into a project like this. Sometimes it’s when you get the best ideas.

Also the addition of the fake snow was at the suggestion of my daughter, and I believe it added a great finishing touch. It created another layer of texture and added to the snow drift feels. I love the shimmer it gives to the finished piece.

Wrap it Up or Not?

Ok, I need your help. I can’t decide if I should display the wreath with a bow or sans ribbon. What do you think? Do I keep it simple? I love the gingerbread snowflakes to shine brightly, but I also like the wow factor of the bow. Luckily it’s an easy thing to add or remove from the wreath, allowing to do it both ways depending on my mood. lol. Let me know your thoughts.

Closing Thoughts

Believe it or not I have one more Christmas project to complete, which I want to share here. My daughter came home today from college and she’s a huge helper so that’s a good thing.
