Tips & Tricks
Serving Board
I assembled the floral crudités arrangement on a wooden board I use for an assortment of appetizers. I like using wood in the kitchen and for server ware since it brings an air of casual rustic vibes. You can also use a large platter or tray to make your vegetables arrangement if you prefer. Use what you have. There are no rules and create a presentation which has your personal style.
Veggie Options
Feel free to use vegetables you prefer. I not only picked carrots, radishes and bell pepper for flavor choices but also for color. This way the platter was full of color like a wildflower field or cottage garden. You could also add long cucumber slices for the grass instead of snap peas or combine the two. The point is you can really use whatever tickles your fancy to create your own flower crudités masterpiece. Chives is also a great choice for the stems. There are many choices to choose from, which makes the process super fun.
Flower Shapes
The vegetable choices also give ideas for the petal shape and size. For example the bell peppers strips produced long spiky petals. I cut some in half to create variation within the petals since many flowers don’t have uniform petals. The carrots are somewhat uniform which resemble a daisy or sunflower, which have more uniformity. The radishes were cut in different directions and stacked, creating a layered petal look. It’s fun to play with food art.
Dip Variety
I used hummus, tzatziki and a zesty white bean dip as the dip options, but feel free to use dips you prefer. Other options might include ranch dip or onion dip and of course everything can be bought premade to facilitate the process or you can whip up your own dip recipe. You can also use the same dip for all the flower centers, which simplifies the arrangement. For this platter the hummus and tzatziki were store bought, but the zesty white bean dip was homemade. I will share the recipe in a subsequent post.
Closing Thoughts
This gives edible flowers a whole new meaning, giving us permission to play with our food. I hope this inspires you to make a pretty festive veggie platter for your loved ones. It’s a fun way to celebrate the season and eat healthy all at the same time. It’s fairly easy to assemble but has a fantastic wow factor.
