The Thrifted Dish Treasure Hunt
Are you like me and pick up pretty dishes at thrifts frequently? Whether it’s a single pretty to use in a simple display or a stack of 6 or 8 to use on an inspired tablescape dishes have so many incredible uses. If you’re not looking at the dishware section and not picking up plates at thrifts, I’m here to tell you, you’re missing out! I’ve sourced more than my share of vintage dishes through thrifting, and I’m not even close to being done yet.
Look for pieces that speak to you and coordinate with your decor aesthetic. Pieces that call my name include transferware, gilded floral porcelain, ironstone, anything with green and more. Identify the things you like and fit your style, seeking them through the houseware section at your local thrift or even garage sales and estate liquidations. You’ll be amazed at what you can find and you might ask yourself, why do I need thrifted dishware? Well, I’m here to help you with that.

How to Easily Create an Amazing Pedestal Plate
This is a really simple DIY and can become addictive. You have been warned. I’m sharing how I create a pedestal with a plate and candlestick here, but you could use bowls and inverted vases and more, using the same technique.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Prep Project
- Read instructions thoroughly
- Assemble all supplies & tools
- Clean plate and candlestick thoroughly
Adhere Plate
- Invert plate on a flat surface
- Apply a layer of E6000 around top rim of candlestick
- Place rim with glue in the center of the back of inverted plate
- Allow adhesive to set fully- overnight is best
Style – Decorate – Enjoy
- Once glue is fully set invert pedestal plate and style in your latest decor vignette
- Voila! I told you it was easy

The pedestal plates should be hand washed only. The high temperature in dishwashers are harsh and compromise the adhesion.
The Pedestal Plate Winning Combination
The pieces I used here include a shabby chic plate with the sweetest florals, scalloped edge and faded gilding. This plate has been loved for sure. It’s made in the USA and has a definite vintage vibe. Meanwhile the base is super interesting. It’s made in France and the green color is everything, plus some gilded markings, which are incredibly unique. Independently I wouldn’t pick either of these up, but together they are a vintage, shabby match made in heaven.
If you find a single lonesome plate which is calling your name and has all the details you love, I say, pick.it.up! Find a candlestick that compliments it and you’ll have a one of a kind pedestal. The base can be any kind of candlestick, including glass, metal, wood or even an inverted bowl or low vase. Let your creativity guide you and design a unique display with you own personal style.
I have quite a few pedestal plates and matching up the base to the tops is my favorite part of the process. There’s an endless amount of possibilities for both the top and bottoms. Some of my favorites are the oval platters with the double arm crystal candlesticks. Besides porcelain plates and bowls, I’ve also used marble and wood. Many of the plates below are from my old inventory when I had a couple of booths. I don’t use all of these, I only have a select few which I use all the time. I have a plan for all the extras, which I hope to share soon.
