Candle Making Basics
Lighting a candle provides a glow and stillness, which is good for our homes, minds and souls. With some basic supplies you an create amazing candles, seasonal accents and fabulous glowing details.
Wax Options
Candle wax options comes in various forms, including block, pellet, flakes and more. I recommend using soy wax which is natural and burns cleanly.


Container Varieties
Containers can be filled with any color wax or added scent for your preferred experience. Old candle containers can be reused. New pieces can be given a glow up with candle wax. Different materials like glass, wood, metal, ceramic and more containers of can be used.
Heat Sources
A stove top or a microwave can be used to melt wax.. Personally I don’t believe there’s a benefit to one over the other, but rather it’s more of a preference thing. My preference is microwave melt wax for simplicity purposes. Always read all the specific instructions on the package of your particular wax. I have included melting kits in the shopping section below for your convenience.

Accessories (wicks, clips, etc.)
There’s some necessary yet simple accessories needed to complete the candle assembly. Wicks, wick stickers and wick holders are needed to complete a home candle making project.

Scents
Adding scents to candles is totally a personal decision. I prefer soft and citrusy scents, but use what appeals to you personally. I know unscented might be preferred for those folks with allergies and other health concerns. Unscented candles are recommended for table settings, since scents don’t play well with food.

Beyond Hot Candle Wax
Beeswax sheets is another alternative if you are not comfortable handling hot wax. These candles are super easy to assemble and are 100% safe, which makes them an easier choice and also a perfect project with kids.
Container DIYs
Different containers in all shapes and sizes can be filled with a wax of choice. It’s a great way to recycle old containers or upcycle found containers or reuse spent candles. Thrifts is a great resource for unique and affordable pieces.
Painting
Paint is a magic wand which can alter metal, glass, ceramic and more containers. This tutorial shows how a simple paint treatment transformed these inexpensive glass containers into vintage jadeite reproductions.


Staining
Beyond painting glassware you can also stain it using a bit of paint and decoupage medium. This technique is fantastic since you can peel the stains and reapply different colors for different looks.

There are many other altering methods for old, existing containers.
