welcoming autumn with a DIY sign

Welcome Fall!

Weloe autu1

The temperature actually dipped in the last few days and it starting to feel a bit like fall.  I’m so excited!  In the high 70s with crisp air and clear skies is my favorite weather.  It always has been.  Although Mr. Masterpiece mentioned it will be back in the 90s in a few days.  Boo.  I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.
I created this cute little sign using an image transfer technique.  It was super easy and super fast.

I found the blank wood sign in the target $ bins, I know, i know this section gets me every time.  But they put it right at the entrance and something always catches my eye and 15 minutes later I need to remind myself to start shopping for what I came to the store for…. but I digress…
Anyway, as soon as I saw the sign I pretty much knew I wanted to do something like this.  If you’re the wood cutting, tool toting type of gal | guy you could probably make this yourself, but I thought $3 was a steal!  This piece is 10×10 and it came with the strung twine for hanging so, yeah, can’t go wrong for the price.

I selected a free graphic on line and for the life of me I cannot locate the source.  I really feel bad because I like to always give credit for this stuff.  sorry and thank you to who ever created the artwork.
I wanted a black & white image and then I used the freezer paper image transfer method.  I cut a piece of freezer paper to 8-1/2 x 11 size so it feeds thru my printer, which I adhere to a piece of card stock the same size so it can feed nicely through the printer and not crumple and get jammed.  once you’ve sized the image to the correct dimensions print it reversed | inverted.  this is very important!!!

Once it’s printed place the image face down on your wood slats and burnish the entire image.  This is why it needs to be inverted otherwise it would be backwards when you transfer the image onto the final piece.  I use a bone folder to burnish my images and it always works like a charm, but you can use your tool of choice.

Viola!

I’ve used this transfer method on furniture pieces when I had a booth at a couple of stores and those pieces always seemed to sell faster.  I’ll share with you some of the items I photographed with you real soon.

In the meantime, my foyer is dressed up for fall, welcoming the season.

Great job! What font and pt. size did you use for “Autumn”?

  4. Hi deb! I downloaded the entire graphic (word & drawing) together as a PDF so I didn’t have control over font. When I printed it the first time I was the perfect size I need so i didn’t Even have resize or anything. Sorry I’m of no help! Hope u can still use it. It’s a cute & simple graphic. Good luck. xo- mj

I love hearing from you!
