I’ve wanted to make sunflower napkin rings for awhile, and I’ve had different ideas circulating in my brain, but I never saw the right mix of quality flowers to the appropriate price point. And then there’s the topic of the base or “ring” for the napkin ring. Then a found these napkin rings while thrifting. I think they were 50cents each, and I had a light bulb moment.

The rings remind me of Bakelite plastic. Do you remember Bakelite? From Wikipedia: “Bakelite was one of the first plastic-like materials to be introduced into the modern world and was popular because it could be moulded and then hardened into any shape.” Anyhoo, they are not Bakelite otherwise I would have reconsidered using them for this project, since Bakelite is now retro and collectible.

Regardless of being Bakelite or not; I loved the shape; I loved the quality; and I loved the whole look. Then I spied cream sunflowers at the Dollar Tree and grabbed a variety of sized flowers. I had initially thought I would make each napkin ring a different design, but as I got into the project I changed my mind. Let’s get moving and DIY some sunflower napkin rings.

The big sunflower below is actually in a little pot, which I was planning to disassemble. I planned to make one napkin ring with the giant flower head and the others with varied designs using the smaller flowers. As I laid it all out and looked at the flowers I decided the giant flower was too giant, and I liked the colors of the smaller flowers better.

The giant potted sunflower has been put on the back burner for now. I am sure you will see her resurface somewhere around here in the future. In the meantime the napkin ring design uses 3 different sized flowers. Each flower has a slightly different color, which will allow for a wider napkin selection to pair with.

Crafting Pro Tip: As I recommend with all my projects, read all the instructions through once and then re-read everything again. This way, you are familiar with everything you need, including supplies and tool, plus you know what to expect.

Warning: Take precaution when handling a hot glue gun; I highly recommend using silicone finger protectors for your safety

Always look at the napkin ring section at your local thrift stores. The ones I see are usually priced pretty low, and they can make great bases for a DIY project like this. If you don’t have any luck at thrifts, I included some other options in the shopping section.

The cost of each napkin ring was barely one dollar to make. Dollar Tree florals are a great resource for seasonal projects like this. The DT floral stems are easily disassembled, and you can’t beat the price point. I considered using dried sunflower heads for this project, but was dissuaded when I considered how they would store and if they would shed and make a mess.

Also any flower can be substituted instead of sunflowers. Roses, hydrangeas, or whatever flower is your jam will create the same happy fresh result. Dollar Tree has a wide selection of flowers although some are cuter than others. Craft stores always run sales on florals and look for stems which have multiple flowers. For example, each DT stem I used had six flower heads so it worked out perfectly for 6 napkin rings. I also include other floral options in the shopping section.

When you adhere the flower head to the ring make sure to hold the flower firmly in place until the hot glue forms a secure bond. If you will adhere several flower heads like I did for my napkin ring design, make sure to allow the the first flower to set securely before you attach the next one and so on. I would also recommend starting with the largest flower head first and working yourself down to the smallest.

I am super jazzed at how these turned out. I love cream colored sunflowers and the ivory plastic rings just paired perfectly. You never know what you will find at thrift stores and how inspiration will grab you. I have my usual running list of things I look for while thrifting and napkin rings is NOT one of them. So it was a nice surprise to stumble on these chunky plastic rings. As many of you know all to well, it’s all about the thrill of the hunt.

Not only do these sunflower napkin rings look beautiful on a table design with a puffy napkin, but I already have other ideas on how to use these beauties. I plan to post something next month if time allows. Fall and the upcoming holiday season always keeps us busy around here with life and projects and events and… Mr. M and I both have birthdays in November, which adds another layer of busyness.
