It’s preferable to start with a blank slate. By removing all existing decor and cleaning the space, it gets rid of what I call “noise” and allows you to design with a clear head. I removed everything from the china cabinet and gave it a good wipe down.

This exercise also helps me get rid of anything that might have been hanging around too long in the cabinet and we do not necessarily use. I can add it to the donation pile for someone else to enjoy.

Have you heard the term “shop your home”? Well, that’s what you are going to do here. Go around your home and collect pieces that fit the color, theme, mood, etc. you are trying to evoke in your styling. There is no need to go out and buy new things.

By assembling pieces that fit a certain “feeling” you are creating a tool kit to use for your styling. With all the pieces together in one place, it makes it easier to decorate, arrange and create a beautiful design by mixing and matching the pieces to reach a composition of your liking.

Once the stage is set, start arranging pieces on the shelf. I usually like to have something in the background as a back drop, including plates, trays and you could even use artwork. From there, place pieces and start making arrangements, There is no right or wrong way to arrange your pieces, but there are some guidelines which might help you along.

Keep varied heights throughout the styling to move the eye around. Using the odd number rule is super helpful. In design using an odd number of pieces, whatever it might be, helps balance the composition. The odd number rule creates a more visually appealing design and creates more energy.

Just because you put a piece down somewhere, it’s not where it needs to stay necessarily. That’s part of the fun. Moving things around and seeing how they look one way paired with something versus somewhere else next to a completely different piece. Play around and have fun. Take a step back and look at it from a different angle. Also look at it with the doors closed and the doors open, if your cabinet or hutch has doors.

A great perspective are photographs. If you can, take pictures and look at the images versus what you see with the naked eye. Sometimes pictures show us things we don’t see ourselves first hand. From there you can tweak anything that does not look good in the pictures or you can always ask opinions from family or friends. I always ask for my daughter’s opinion when she’s home. She has a very different perspective and I love her input.

Once you “think” you are done, edit some more. This might involve moving pieces, or maybe removing something all together and of course adding something if you feel something is missing.

By acknowledging something isn’t working, opens us to new opportunities. Keep playing until every detail makes you happy. I find setting pieces in place and walking away gives a fresh perspective. When you come back to the project you will see things differently and will probably make adjustments you might have not done before.

Once you are done, done, sit back and enjoy your new pretty styling. Projects like this always makes me smile in my home. It’s a little pop of seasonal freshness, which spreads a bit of cheer around your home for whatever season, event or celebration.

The above is still the work in progress. The bottom shelves were still in motion until the final composition. For example, the 2nd to last shelf kept bothering me, since it had too much symmetry. Although the overall cabinet composition has a bit of symmetry, it’s more of a relaxed balance.

When I shopped my home and collected items for the styling, there were three main star components, and I used them in mass to create a cohesive look. All these pieces are on repeat around here, but it’s always refreshing to use them in a new way.

I curated the green bottle collection through many years. You can read more about them here {through the seasons – green bottle collection}. Some are vintage from the USA, several are from France and some are from Uruguay. It’s an eclectic mix, but the fact that they are all green bottles brings them together.

If you’ve been here longer than a hot minute, then you know I love all things transfer ware and the green always captures my heart. I shared my green transfer ware collection here {thrifted green transferware goodies}. I have varied designs and shades of green, which make it interesting and layered to style them together.

I absolutely love all things moss, which I know I am not alone here, and organic decor always adds great texture and depth to any styling. Organic details like the preserved flowers in the vintage French canning jar on the top shelf, and the assorted moss balls (real and faux), plus accents like the moss mushroom are a great way to add freshness and depth to a styling.

Green is my inspirational color, which I make work for each season. Since I tend to lean towards green decor and accents it’s easy for me to bring them together. Whatever your jam is, make it work for your own home. Whether it’s blue & white decor or paisley designs or linear accents, make it work seasonally for your own home.

We all have our own signature style and once you learn to embrace whatever it is, you can make it shine. Also keep in mind your personal style will evolve through time. Although your style will morph through trends and seasons, always try to remain true to the core of your preferences. This is what will make your styling designs unique and yours.

I am in love with this tray and it would have played so nicely in this styling.

Mini moss balls are great decor accents to fill in small places anytime.

These are similar to the faux moss stone balls I have.

This set of green bottles is great.

This Portmeirion mug set has all the organic feels I love; they would be fantastic not only as mugs but as vases or planters.

This tray is everything!… some day.
