Spring Easter Mantel Decor Styling

Have you started decorating for Spring yet? The mantel shelf over the fireplace begs to be decorated for the new season. Muted elegance and calm sophistication come together to set a timeless Spring-y Easter mantel decor styling. My taste leans towards vintage and rustic, but you can adapt the techniques used here for any look.

Inspiration for the Spring Easter Mantel Decor Styling

Springtime is all about lighter and brighter feels. Mixing classic pieces with airy rattan elements and touches of whimsy for the cheery season creates a calm and charming display, which works for the Spring season and Easter holiday.

Seasonal decor, intermixed with homespun pieces and organic elements creates a light, timeless and charming display for the season.

How to Layer a Spring Easter Mantel Styling

This isn’t necessarily an asymmetrical mantle styling, but at the same time it’s also not a symmetrical design either. The display is balanced, but it does not mirror itself. Arranging thoughtful layers with contrasting textures and heights achieves a cohesive, charming and interesting display, which whispers springtime in a subtle and calculated manner.

Blank Slate

For most projects it’s preferable to start with a clean slate. It clears the mind, getting rid of any “noise” and provides a blank canvas to start creating. The entire mantle shelf is cleared and the clean mirror will reflect all the elements for added depth and movement.

Foundation

The mantel shelf remains bare for this styling to provide the airiness and freshness of spring. Garlands and swags are other options to create a bed for the mantel decor to nestle in, but for this particular display I prefer a cleaner and simpler design.

Backdrop

Just like the foundation creates structure so does a backdrop. A gilded mirror hangs above the mantel shelf with thrifted frames, leaning on the mirror, creating depth and dimension. One frame remains open to add to the airy effect and another holds a DIY bunny painting to accent the theme.

Anchors

The anchors stabilize the mantel display at each end. A symmetrical design would have identical elements mirroring each other on each end. Here a rattan vase holds an organic dried floral arrangement, off set by a bunch of pussy willow stems in a vintage Lenox vase. I love the juxtaposition of the rustic rattan against the traditional porcelain.

Seasonal Intention

Seasonal elements are added to ground the spring-y Easter theme. I only used two motifs here, rabbits and eggs, but repeated them for consistency and interest. The bunny picture is repeated by the bunny statue and the bunny garland, which is a super easy DIY. The eggs are echoed with the porcelain Fitz & Floyd Lily of the Valley egg, DIY floral eggs and a rattan egg.

Organic

Spring is all about bringing the outside in and replicating fresh blooms sprouting outdoors. Although I don’t have fresh flowers sprinkled on the mantel per se, I include a lush dried floral arrangement and a bunch of pussy willows. These floral elements are light and airy although in a more muted and neutral color palette than the normal cheery pastels of spring. This is my personal style. Use what speaks to you and evokes your decor aesthetic.

DIYs

Home crafted elements provide a personalization and customization to home decor, which puts your personal stamp on your home, which nobody can replicate. I’m a crafter at heart and have been making some type of homespun creation since a very young age. It goes without saying you find a homemade treasure around every corner in my home and this styling is no different. The bunny image turned into a painting hack, the floral Easter eggs and the bunny garland are all homespun pieces.

Garlands, Banners & Swags

Hanging elements like garlands, banners and swags add movement to displays. This movement whether noticed or not creates depth and interest to a display. These elements can be draped on the mantel shelf, either resting on the shelf or hanging down towards the fireplace like the bunny garland here. An alternative is to hang these elements on the backdrop, whether a mirror, artwork or whatever it might be.

Tips & Recommendations to Keep In Mind

Varied Heights

Along with the layers moving the eye up & down and front to back, other accent elements are also most pleasing to the eye when they have some variety. Use pieces that are of different heights and scale or simply use risers to create height differences.

Added Textures

Mixed and matched textures create an interesting unique look. The dried organics, pussy willow stems and rattan pieces all add layered textures which compliment each other, but yet have contrast. Textures are a tactile element which draws the eye in and adds interest.

Maintain Scale

Keep all your decor elements proportional to each other. Both anchor floral elements have the same prominent scale. While the small porcelain egg and rattan egg balance a petite scale on each end of the mantel bringing the eye slightly down. All the other elements are similar in size maintaining that middle ground eye level.

Follow the Odd Number Rule

The idea behind the odd number rule in design is that things arranged in odd numbers are more visually appealing and create more energy.  The composition will be more dynamic if there’s an odd number of elements. The Lenox porcelain vases are a trio, plus there are three bunny elements and three coordinating frames.

Ground the Theme

Although it’s a muted color palette with a neutral design the bunnies and Easter eggs make the theme clear. Include the Hearth

Integrating the hearth into the mantel design styling creates a cohesive display. Hearth decor will bring the eye down, creating a bigger impact. To further extend the styling space, decorate the hearth adding more detail, interest and completing the entire fireplace area. By creating cohesive movement from top to bottom gives a mantel and fireplace surrounding a completed look.

Just a last factoid I wanted to share. As I typed vintage Lenox vases at the beginning of the post, I just had to smile.
