Inspiration for the Simple Rustic Christmas Wreath DIY

Creating your own Christmas wreath allows for personalization and customization to your signature style. I use different types of wreaths for Christmas on our front door, and this year I wanted to use a pretty bow. I’ve been crushing on these big statement bows this year, allowing for fresh looks by mixing and matching different ribbons through the seasons.

I’ve had this oval grapevine wreath kicking around for a long time. It has had many dress changes through the years for different seasons. I love how it looks in all its organic nakedness. Simple is sometimes good, but for Christmas I have to go a bit extra. A few years ago the wreath got a minimalist Christmas look. This year a few rustic elements are offset by the big festive bow.

I’m a bit obsessed with these larger than life bows. It’s fun to mix and match the different ribbon styles, layering them to create a unique look. A coordinating ribbon bow will be attached to the mailbox for a festive curbside styling. I will share the Christmas outdoor decor and porch next week.

How To Create a Simple Rustic Christmas Wreath

Everything is attached to the wreath using floral wire, which can easily be removed after the season. This way the grapevine wreath can be used for another seasonal project down the road.

Supplies

• Grapevine Wreath
• Ribbon Bow {follow this tutorial}
• Fresh Greenery Branches
• Assorted Feathers
• Medium Sized Pine Cone
• Florist Wire

• Gardening Shears
• Scissors

Crafting Pro Tip: As I recommend with all my projects, read all the instructions through once and then re-read everything again. This way, you are familiar with everything you need and know what to expect.

Instructions

• Read instructions thoroughly and assemble all supplies & tools
• Attach bow to grapevine wreath using floral wire (I attached mine off to one side)

• Snip greenery branches to appropriate size
• Tuck greenery branches into grapevine form behind bow
• Once the branches are in the desired position attach with florist wire to secure in place

• Tuck feathers into greenery and grapevine wreath

• Using florist wire attach pine cone on top of feathers and greenery

• Fluff bow and play with all organic elements so they are positioned the way you desire.
• Voila! Hang your rustic Christmas wreath and enjoy for the season.

Tips & Tricks for the Rustic Christmas Wreath DIY

Florist wire is used to attach everything on the grapevine wreath so it can be disassembled after the season and repurposed. Everything is sustainable with the exception of the greenery. You can use faux greenery if you wish to use the wreath again. I would recommend using a hot glue gun it you want a permanent wreath to use again. I purposely wanted a one and done, since I change the front door wreath every year.

If you want a bit of bling you can add Christmas baubles. I think bells or unique ornaments would be great additional accents. I wanted to keep it on the simpler and organic side. You can also add other organic elements like cinnamon sticks or dried orange slices. A small bird’s nest would also be a super cute detail with the feathers.

Grapevine wreath forms are a great foundation for DIY projects since you can secure elements using the vines themselves. I would always recommend using something to adhere everything securely though, whether it’s wire or glue or floral picks. Doors are opened and closed frequently (at least ours is), and you want your wreath to be able to withstand all the movement.

Not to sound like a broken record, but I love the life and movement these statement bows bring to the party. Five different ribbons are used to create this bow, which sounds like a lot. The thing is, I didn’t necessarily pay a lot for the ribbons. Two varieties were bought deeply discounted, one was thrifted, one was from the Dollar Tree and the final one has been in my Christmas stash for years.
