Hello friends.
Since winter is in full stride and many of us are enjoying warm fires and plenty of candlelight, I wanted to share a quick craft knock off for some super cute matchsticks that you won’t want to hide in a drawer but rather display next to your decor.
Although I just finished this project, I’ve been wanting to do it since I first spied one of these back in the fall when I had the fun shopping outing with my friends to the new anthro shoppe in our area. You can see all the details of that trip here.

And although Anthropologie no longer carries this particular type you can find them here.
This was my muse and I saw them at quite a few boutique retailers over the holidays, which only inspired me that much more since I was not willing to spend close to $20 dollars for a jar of matches, regardless of how cute they were. I was too busy over the holiday season to actually pull it together but once I set out to do it in the new year, it did not take that long at all.
I used an old spice jar and a box of matches from the dollar store plus a label I created myself on the computer. The label is the only part that really requires some work. I used the original as a guideline plus exercised some creative license.
This matchstick apothecary jar is super cute and I’m happy to leave my matches out on the mantel for the fire or on the dining table for my candles or… anywhere really. They add to the decor rather than take away from it, the way a matchbook or lighter would.
Miss Masterpiece actually asked me to make one for her room since she loves how it looks too. We are a scented candle family and everyone has there preferred fragrance in their room.
I can make one for every bedroom in the house since it probably cost less than $2 each, using a spice jar that would have otherwise ended up in the recycle bin plus a matchbox from the $ tree that yields two apothecary jars along with a shipping label that we always have on hand. not bad, huh?
“Sun glows for a day, candle for an hour, matchstick for a minute but a good day can glow forever.”

It came out really cute!! I love the green matchsticks. Very creative.
thanks tracy. i didn’t pick the green matchsticks, it’s what came inside the big box at the dollar tree. i actually didn’t even know they were green until i got home and opened the package. i was pleasantly surprised since i think they’re super cute & it’s one of my colors of choice. xo- mj
I really like this idea because I can’t seem to catch up with the small match boxes. Thank you for sharing with us this week at Celebrate Your Story, have a great weekend.
They are cute! Isn’t it funny how putting them in a pretty jar makes such a difference? One of my friends gave me the sweetest jar filled with green ones for my birthday one year. They are so fun to look at that I don’t want to use them. lol! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
