If you’ve been around here longer than a hot minute then you know I’m an avid thrifter. I’ve curated and collected a wide variety of charming baskets through years of thrifting and junking. While I was brainstorming this post, I couldn’t decide which type of basket to use. So on that note, I decided to use three different types of baskets with different themes to provide a variety of ideas and inspiration.

I will share a Fenton white milk glass ruffled basket decorated for Easter, a thrifted silver basket decked out for Spring and last but not least, a vintage wicker basket with all the garden feels. How fun is that? Let’s get busy and decorate some baskets for the season.

Nests, birds, feather, florals and more give this silver basket vignette all the spring feels. The bottom of the basket is lined with excelsior to create a bed for all the accents to rest on. A bird’s nest with eggs is paired with a bird and feathers to tell a spring inspired story. Dried roses and baby’s breath add more texture to round out the arrangement.

The Easter basket is the quintessential accessory for the traditional Easter egg hunt. Although most Easter baskets tend to be wicker type basket, we’re going to shake things up a bit today and use a vintage milk glass ruffled basket. A chocolate bunnies, Easter eggs, faux floral and more displayed on vintage linens tells us an Easter story. The milky white color is the perfect backdrop for all the soft Easter colors.

A handled wicker gathering basket gives all the garden vibes all on its own, but with potted bulbs, garden tools & accessories, a seed packet and more plants the gardening theme. A bundle of Rosemary stems freshly picked lemons from the garden makes the basket smell divine. When decor hits more than one sense, it compounds the effect and emotions it conveys.

What You’ll Need

  • Basket: wicker gathering basket
  • Accent #3: floral sheers & frog
  • Foundation | Base: reindeer moss
  • Accent #4: fresh herbs

  • Accent #5: seed packet
  • Accent #2: garden tools & accessories

This basket is not only pretty but also practical. It’s how we gather and harvest from the garden all the time. I love when things intersect at the corner of fancy and functional.

Decorating a basket for seasonal intention is an easy decor accent. Wicker and rattan basket options can be found in a vast array of locales, ranging from 2nd hand destinations to normal retailers. But an exceptional basket amps up your basket vignette even before your start decorating. A unique and thoughtful container takes you basket vignette game to the next level.

Like I mentioned above I source most of my baskets at thrift stores. Thrifts are a great resource for charming decor which can be used in unexpected ways with the proper attention. Garage and estate sales are also great places to find unique vintage basket options. If you want to spend a bit more antique malls, auctions and on-line retailers like E-bay and Etsy are great sources.

Collect and organize all your supplies before you start decorating your vignette. Bringing all your supplies and decor pieces together helps facilitate the process. Having everything at the ready in one place makes decorating more enjoyable and reduces stress. This way there is no need to stop and search for something. Grab items even if you’re not 100% sure you will use them. That’s part of the process, editing and figuring out what works and what doesn’t.

Creating a base for all the decor elements to rest on provides form and structure from the bottom up. For these particular baskets, excelsior, assorted linens and reindeer moss create varied foundations. All these different elements add texture, color and contrast, which adds to the vignette in a very subtle manner. Spanish moss, decorative tissue paper and greenery are other great foundation options.

From the foundation build layers from the bottom up and from the inside out. Having accent elements spilling out over the basket creates interest and movement to the display. Move the elements around until a pleasing composition is achieved. Take a step back and preview the basket vignette from afar and from different angles to make sure it looks good from all directions.

I’m a big proponent of shopping your home first and looking for decor pieces you can use in unexpected ways. I didn’t buy anything new to create these seasonal basket vignettes. I leaned into my decor arsenal and used elements which fit the themes. Many of the pieces are used in different ways for other seasons and holidays, extending their worth and purpose.

I used vintage pieces with organic elements and seasonal accents to create the basket vignettes. These are elements which speak to me and make me happy. I use many of these elements around my home throughout the year regardless of season or holiday. Making decor work beyond seasonality extends their purpose and makes for sustainable decorating.

I chose thrifted baskets because it’s how I decorate. Thrifted pieces are unique and always bring character to a decor arrangement. I highly recommend leaning into second hand sources for decorative accents to curate your home. Next time you’re at a thrift, or flea market or garage sale look for unique baskets. You’ll be surprised at what you find at great values.

  1. So many creative ideas here MaryJo! (I’m pretty sure my mom had one of those hobnail milk glass baskets when I was a kid. I distinctly remember having to dust it!) 🙂 You always share the prettiest vignettes. Looking forward to joining you next month.
