An oversized ornamental birdcage sits on the console table in front of our big picture window in the living room, facing the front yard. It measures 28-inches wide by 32-inches tall and 12-inches deep, making it a pretty substantial piece. It’s a great focal point to decorate for the different seasons and holidays.

It was a great find at Tuesday Morning years ago. It’s a distressed reproduction cage, and my only wish is that it was an authentic vintage piece, but then again, it might not have been such a great find then. Either way, I absolutely love it and love to style it. Come on in and lets’s talk about how to style a simple Easter vignette in an ornamental birdcage.

Reader Tip: Since the birdcage sits in front of a large picture window the back lighting is always tricky to navigate. Photographs were taken with different lighting from early morning to late morning, afternoon and night time, using natural and artificial light. This is in the hope that the photographs provide the proper depiction of all the styling details.

The steps and elements used in this styling are part of the same formula I use in many decorative vignettes. The pieces should all come together to create a feeling with interest, depth and movement. The theme for this decor vignette is the Easter holiday and Spring season.

Organics are super important in home interiors, bringing freshness and texture into spaces. In this particular vignette, a house plant sits in a glazed gray urn cache pot. The plant pot sits in a thrifted cigar box, which is a recent find. For more height, a stack of vintage thrifted books work as a riser for the plant.

As mentioned above, thrifted pieces are favorites around here. Besides the cigar box and vintage books, the silver pieces are also thrifted. Three silver vases and two chalice cups are clustered on one side of the birdcage. The chalice cups are the perfect egg holders for the DIY floral Easter eggs. I love the texture, patina and uniqueness thrifted pieces bring to the party.

DIY crafted projects always adds personalization to seasonal decor. Besides the floral Easter eggs, the crown tea light holders and the bunny garland draped on the front of the birdcage are DIYs I have shared here in the past. The eggs and bunny reinforce the Easter theme while the tea lights add ambience.

It wouldn’t be a seasonal themed vignette without seasonal accents. Besides the Easter eggs and the bunny garland, a small bird’s nest with a cute bird sitting on top is nestled in the front of the birdcage. All these seasonal pieces gives all the Spring feels and Easter vibes.

So not to be confused with ambient lighting, lighting for ambience is to create a mood rather than to illuminate. Small tea lights add a glow to create magic in the vignette. Flanking the birdcage, sit two candle pillars as well, adding more candle flicker magic.

Before you buy anything new for seasonal decor, shop your home first. What does this mean? Look at what you already own, whether it’s seasonal or everyday decor. Gather as many things that fit the theme or look your are going for. From there start to establish a foundation and build the vignette around it. The books and silver pieces established the foundation here. Nothing new was bought for this styling. It’s always economical to just use same items in different ways.

Layering elements from back to front and bottom to top is key to the composition. Stylings have more interest when they have different heights and build themselves from the back to the front, The different elevations add depth and movement to the arrangement. The different elevations keep the eye moving from front to back and side to side, creating interest.

Arrangements with an odd number tend to be more visually appealing and dynamic Odd numbers create a sense of asymmetry and dynamism, making the composition more interesting and engaging for the viewer. The silver pieces are clustered in 5 pieces while there are five vintage books on the other side. Also there are 3 DIY projects and three thrifted elements, including books, silver plate and the cigar box. All these numbers are considerations when bringing the arrangement together.

Different colors and finishes add contrast and interest to a composition. I tend to lean towards neutrals so my color palette is edited, but simple touches like the graphics on the cigar box and book spines add enough pops of interesting color. The main color of course is the mint green floral egg and the green house plant. The plant and egg add texture as well, as do the tattered vintage books. The patina on the vintage silver pieces add another layer.

In design, finishing touches add the details and elements which complete and refine a project. These final details add personality, polish and a sense of wholeness. My go to finishing touch tends to be a ribbon or bow, but in this styling I used the bunny garland draped on the birdcage. The garland not only adds the finishing touch but it also reinforces the Easter theme.

As you can see thrifted pieces and DIYs are on repeat around here. This way decor achieves a uniqueness and personalization, which brings a special touch to your home. On that note, the new thrifted goodies post drops on Thursday with a special guest, and more seasonal DIYs coming your way next week.
