Vintage brown transfer ware is beautiful to use anytime of year, but it’s especially perfect for Fall decor. This easy DIY tutorial shows a hack on how to create the brown transferware look. With some simple Dollar Tree supplies, you can recreate the brown transferware look for your Fall decor.

This faux brown transferware plate coordinates nicely with other thrifted vintage transferware pieces. This simple hack creates a great accent piece and adds to a collection seamlessly. Please keep in mind this project so for a simple accent decor piece and not food grade. I do not recommend using this dish as a serving platter for food, which requires washing.

Inspiration for the Brown Transferware Hack
The shelf liner with the brown toile pattern is from the Dollar Tree. I grabbed it since I really liked the pattern, but I didn’t have an initial purpose for it. I knew inspiration would hit, and then I remembered this process {DIY Glass Plates for a Custom Look}. It immediately clicked and here we are.

How to Create the Brown Transferware Look DIY Step by Step Tutorial
This DIY proved to a be bit more challenging than expected. All the details can be found in the Tip & Techniques section below, regardless I’m pleased with how it turned out. I have suggestions on how to navigate the challenges and other options to avoid the challenge all together. Let’s get crafty!

Supplies
- Glass Dinner Plate
- Brown Toile Shelf Liner
- Decoupage Medium
- Gold Pen

Tools
- Scissors
- Foam Brush
- Clips (clothes pins, chip clips or crafting clamps, etc.)
Crafting Pro Tip: Read all the instructions through once and then re-read everything again. This way, you are familiar with everything you need and know what to expect.
Instructions
- Read instructions thoroughly and assemble all supplies & tools
- Remove all labels and packaging materials from plate and liner
- Place plate on shelf liner and cut a piece slightly larger than plate

- Using foam brush apply liberal coat of decoupage medium on entire backside of plate
- Lay self liner piece centered on back of plate with pattern facing outward (the front) off plate

- Apply weighted pressure to adhere liner to plate securely

- Once liner is adhered securely to plate cut off excess liner, flush to edge of plate
- If areas on lip of plate are lifting use clips or clamps to hold them in place while the decoupage medium seals securely

- Using gold pen fill edge of plate to create gilding effect

- Voila! Enjoy your new faux brown transferware plate, styled in your Fall decor

Tips & Recommendations to Keep In Mind
Proper Pressure
The brown toile liner I used was a vinyl material, used to line shelves, drawers, etc. The thickness of the vinyl took more effort to adhere with the decoupage medium than other materials I’ve used like printed paper, paper napkins, etc. The weight is key to provide the proper seal. I used a stack of plates and let the project sit overnight. The plates followed the same contour as the project glass plate, which helped add weight to the well and the lip of the plate.

Even with the weight of the plate stack the lip of the plate area was difficult to seal. Using clamps and clips to keep this area secure a bit longer helped the decoupage medium create a seal. Use a liberal amount of decoupage medium while you secure the lip area of the plate before adding the clips | clamps.
Other Liner Options
If you would prefer to avoid the issue above, you can create the same effect using fabric, paper, or napkins, etc. which are lighter in nature. I have included some options in the shopping section below to help you achieve the brown transfer-ware look. Here’s another post {How to Decoupage Easter Eggs} with a decoupage tutorial which might prove to be helpful if you’re interested in the technique.

Mix & Match
This faux brown transferware piece is super versatile, which can be styled alone or mix and matched with other real vintage transferware. I love tranferware and the light brown toile pattern used here, which is almost sepia toned, can mix and match with other patterns. Brown, gray and even green transferware all coordinate for a harvest Fall effect.
