How to Create a Peter Rabbit Vignette in the Garden

Peter Rabbit garden vignette

Hopefully this garden vignette transports you to the magical pages of The World of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. Beatrix Potter penned and illustrated this collection and the images are iconic. I went through the books looking at the illustrations as I brainstormed and planned this vignette.

With some key, but not complicated items, you can create this fun and whimsical vignette in your garden too. Come on in and I’ll share how I created this Peter Rabbit vignette and how you can make it in your own garden.

Obviously Peter Rabbit is the inspiration behind this whimsical vignette styling in the vegetable garden. Many years ago I almost, almost, decorated our first baby nursery with a Peter Rabbit theme. But ultimately, I decided I did not want a “theme” inspired nursery. That being said, I did have many Beatrix Potter pieces here and there throughout the nursery.

One of my treasured pieces is the World of Peter Rabbit boxed book collection. I am saving this for my grandkids some day and hopefully it will stay in the family for many years to come. Anyway, I love the illustrations as much as the words. Beatrix Potter is the most celebrated children’s artist of the century for a reason.

A Peter Rabbit themed anything is always super cute in my book (no pun intended). This whimsical garden vignette would be fun for a little’s birthday party or for a baby shower or for a garden party or many other occasions. It’s always fun to channel our inner child and play.

Peter Rabbit is as well know as the blue coat his mother puts on him and buttons up before he goes off to Mr. McGregor’s Garden. We crossed and tied two twigs with twine to hang this little blue sweater coat. Such an easy project. Mr. M found the twigs on a local trail on his daily walks with Misty.

I found the blue sweater at a local thrift shop a few months ago while they were having a clothing sale, and it immediately gave me Peter Rabbit vibes. I don’t necessarily look at baby clothing but I do look at the games and the two sections are right next to each other so this little blue sweater caught my eye as I was passing by. For a couple of dollars I thought it would make a cute prop for this project.

You can also make your own little coat with a piece of blue fabric. While researching this post I found a few sources with templates. Since I wasn’t planning on doing this I can’t recommend any particular source, but it’s a thought. If you wish to go that route, a simple google search will yield a few resources, but thrifting a little blue coat is more my jam.

Thrifting haul

You could also include a pair a shoes in the vignette since Peter rabbit loses both his blue jacket and his shoes in Mr. McGregor’s garden. I was tempted to dig in the attic through the baby bins since I’m pretty sure I saved Master M’s first pair of little white baby shoes, but alas the physical aspect of this undertaking kept me at bay.

After I had the little blue jacket in place, I created a few signs to tell the story. I used the silver tray DIY chalkboards I recently shared in this spring tablescape {woodsy spring blooming table}. The signs are placed around the garden, helping set the scene.

I created three different signs:

  • Mr. McGregor’s Garden
  • No Rabbits Allowed
  • Rabbits Keep Out

The signs are attached to branches simply by using shipping tape on the back of the chalkboard trays. Once the chalkboards were secured to the branches, we staked them into the garden around the little blue coat.

Of course anything with a bunny rabbit motif is a perfect accent. We included this bunny rabbit statuary to represent the unwanted bunny community. lol. You cannot create a Peter Rabbit garden vignette without a rabbit, not to sound redundant or obvious.

The bunny is actually a decoration from the Masterpiece kiddos baby nursery. The bunny and the duck statuary sat on their bookshelves as book ends. Now they sit in our vegetable garden on the daily. The duck represents Jemima Puddle-Duck, which is the 9th book in the series.

Of course Mr. McGregor has many gardening tools throughout his garden, which are beautifully illustrated through the pages of the book. We scattered tools and gardening pieces throughout, taking inspiration from the wonderful pictures created by Beatrix Potter.

We included:

  • Vintage Watering Can
  • Large Shovel
  • Wicker Cloches
  • Flower Pots
  • Tomato Cages

Since this is our active vegetable garden, some of these items were already in place. The large flower pot contains our fresh mint, but you could add pots here and there for added effect. The cages are staked around our tomato plants.

Other items we have in other areas of the garden like the watering can and shovel, which were easy to integrate into the vignette to add to the Mr. McGregor garden vibes.

Of course the garden vegetables are what Peter Rabbit is all about and what ultimately gets him into trouble. Although all our veggies and herbs are thriving all around the planting boxes, we added more for full effect.

Our local farmers market was a fabulous resource for some amazing fresh produce. The first thing Peter Rabbit eats in Mr. McGregor’s garden is lettuce. The bunch of kale from the farmer’s market plus the butter crunch and arugula we are growing in the beds gave plenty of options.

Multi colored carrots, which no rabbit can pass up, plus earthy beets and bushy radishes were also fabulous options. While shopping at the farmer’s market I wanted fun veggies for this project, but I also selected produce we will eat. I have some fun recipes planned for these choices.
