We planted our veggie garden for the year. Ok let me clarify. I selected the varieties, the whole family shopped for the plants, I arranged the vegetables and Matt did the actual planting. I did some things different this year based on last year’s yield. I love to see our garden grow.
Planting Selections
Tried & True
Basil, parsley, oregano, rosemary and small tomatoes are always on repeat around here. Last year the cherry, pear and grape tomatoes puss the jalapeño and long Italian peppers were my favorites.
Did not Make the Cut
What I did not dig from last year’s crop were the zucchini, squash and cucumbers. They grew to freakish sizes. It could be grower malfunction and should have maybe harvest them sooner? Not quite sure what happened there, but the mutant size veggies were a true off.
New Introductions
New additions to the plantings this year are snap peas, arugula, and butter crunch lettuces. I am excited to see how these do.
Thoughts on the Garden
I will be the first to admit, I was not a good garden tenderer last season. I hope to do better this year. The snap peas and lettuces have me excited so we’ll see how they fair. We planted the lettuces from seeds so they will take more time.
The rosemary, chives and strawberry plants survived through the winter so we all see how they do the season. Actually we didn’t harvests any strawberries last year, so I am looking forward to that this year.
We also do an individual planter of mint. We keep the mint separate so it does not take over the raised beds. we hope the mint willl help with some Mojito magic since it’s the one cocktail, which tends to evade us over here. I also like a few sprigs for desserts. it’s a nice finishing touch.
