Gingerbread DIY Decor Ideas & Inspiration

gingerbread DIY decor ideas & inspiration

You can find beautiful gingerbread pieces everywhere you look from high end pieces at Pottery Barn to more reasonable pieces at HomeGoods or Target. All these pieces add up though, which is why creating you own seasonal decor is always a fantastic option. Not only is it economical, but you can adapt your creations perfectly to your signature style.

I have been obsessing over gingerbread for a while now, before it actually was on trend. It always gives that home, cozy feels. Layer on a homespun aspect by creating you own gingerbread decor and it easily becomes a family favorite.

I’m not gonna lie, the Pottery Barn collection is a primary inspiration for several of my pieces. They keep expanding the collection every year, which only provides more ideas and inspiration. Let’s get busy and create some fabulous faux gingerbread decor.

I prefer the simple gingerbread design with a neutral color palette. If you would like to add more colorful details please feel free. That’s the beauty of home crafted projects- make them yours!

A faux gingerbread snowflake wreath is incredibly festive in an understated way. The wreath is winter inspired, which can be displayed past the Christmas holiday into the New Year without missing a beat. With some simple and affordable supplies, you can pull this wreath project together. The wooden snowflake pieces are from the Dollar Tree while the grapevine wreath form cost about $5 at Hobby Lobby. Put them together with some paint and it creates an incredible wreath decor piece. I love the layered textures of the piece with the homespun charm gingerbread always brings to the party.

By altering little decor houses you can make the perfect gingerbread house. You can achieve the look by using little decorative houses that have a good profile but not necessarily the proper aesthetic. Look for little decor pieces or toy houses at the Dollar Tree, discount stores, thrift stores, and garage sales. For a few dollars you can turn these pieces into trend forward decor accents.

Faux Tile Gingerbread Men DIY

These festive gingerbread men are easy to make, very inexpensive and incredibly fabulous! Using faux tile to create these gingerbread men hit all the vintage and rustic tones I enjoy in home decor. The tiles and gingerbread men are a marriage made in heaven, mixing and mingling traditional and vintage feels.  The wooden gingerbread men forms make this project super easy.

This is a great hack from a thrifted mug to create an easy DIY gingerbread decor accent piece.  Inspired by the Pottery Barn look. The PB pieces are on the spendy side, but this hack is an easy and affordable decoration. The neutral brown color combined with the simplicity of the white icing design makes for a classic look. Three bucks and homemade works for me!

A recycle piece gets a glow-up into an old fashioned inspired gingerbread canister. A rescued old cookie tin is prevented from heading to the landfill, and transformed into a gingerbread decor accent.  Using a recycled item for the project also makes it environmentally conscious. I rescued my tin from the recycle bin, but you can find tons of tin varieties at thrift stores. If you are looking for the exact tin I used, I included the cookies in the shopping section for your convenience.

The warm caramel color by Rustoleum is the perfect gingerbread color. I have used it on a few different projects, and it never disappoints. I am on my first can of spray paint still, so a little goes a long way. Upcoming gingerbread projects will use alternative gingerbread color paint so stay tuned.

Practice using the white puffy paint on a scratch piece of paper first to get the hang of drawing and determine your design options. I actually drew a few different sketches of ideas before I started to have a feel for the task. Let creativity guide you as you start applying the puffy paint on the finished piece. Have fun and make it yours. I used the Pottery Barn designs as a guide, but ultimately used what I also like and felt comfortable drawing (this girl knows her limitations).
