forcing bulbs inside & more

I love forcing bulbs inside to decorate over the holidays.  Some years I’m really good about it and other years not so much.

Bulbs

I’m ON it this year and I’m super excited.

Bulbs1

I love to decorate with nature and this is a great way to add to the greenery & pine cones I use during the holidays.

Bulbs2

Here’s a sneak peek to what I hope to share over the holidays when they start to bloom and add natural warmth to our home over the winter months.

Bulbs3

This year I planted hyacinths in a cast iron planter which is a winning combination in my book.

Bulbs4

I also planted a couple of varieties of snowdrops in silver plate.  I absolutely love the daintiness of the snowdrops!

Bulbs5

But my favorite bulb to force is muscari.  I’m using quite a few varieties this year; some in brown transferware, because I love the brown & blue combination plus others in some rusty tin cans I had planted outside over the summer.
Bulbs6
I’m also planting bulbs outside in our yard for the first time.

Bulbs7

I’m incorporating yellow daffodils in front of the purple russian sage  that borders the fence around the vegetable garden.

Bulbs8

I think the yellow|purple combination will be a great big welcome to spring next year.

Bulbs9

Once my bulbs are ready for their coming out party I will share how I incorporate them into my holiday decor.  It’s so much more rewarding to force them yourself than to simply buy them and waaay more inexpensive.

Bulbs10

I’m trying to stay grounded in the Thanksgiving holiday but Christmas keeps getting  my attention.  How about you?
“Forcing is a technique that imitates the environmental conditions that bulbs encounter outdoors, thereby tricking them into flowering earlier.”

This is so timely! I was sweeping leaves from the deck yesterday and found a pot of lilac bulbs tucked away in the corner. My first thought was to throw them away but I had second thoughts. Thankfully! Thanks for the tutorial and for sharing this at Celebrate Your Story and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Ditto. Christmas is creeping up on me despite my best efforts:) I think your bulbs will look beautiful once bloomed. I know that some people force paper whites at Christmas but I just don’t like the smell:( I would do much better with the varieties you choose! Thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm — hope to see you there at tomorrow’s party as well:) xo Kathleen |Our Hopeful Home

  7. Hi kathleen. I’m with you. I can’t force paoerwhites cuz of the scent. The hubby dislikes it as well. That’s why I do these varieties. Highly recommend! xo- mj
