Inspiration Behind the Walnut Yarn Acorns

Last month I created this wreath with golden walnuts, and I loved the look. I really liked how the walnuts looked all glammed up. So of course my wheels started turning.

Then my friend Michelle from Thistle Key Lane shared this faux acorn project and it immediately triggered my light bulb moment. I knew I had the chenille yarn in my craft stash and it would be perfect to pair with the walnuts to create some acorn decor. The gold, silver and copper finishes added a touch of glam. How to DIY Walnut Yarn Acorns

Supplies

Walnuts
Yarn
Spray Paint (I used Silver, Gold, Copper)

Tools

Hot Glue Gun
Hot Glue Gun Glue Sticks
Scissors
Silicone Fingers

Crafting Pro Tip: As I recommend with all my projects, read all the instructions through once and then re-read everything again. This way, you are familiar with everything you need and know what to expect.

Instructions

Read all the Instructions through and assemble all your supplies
Spray paint walnuts on one one side and set aside to dry
Once first side of walnuts are dry, flip over and spray the other side, allowing to dry thoroughly
Once acorns are fully dry and cured, they are ready to have their acorn top hats adhered (aka yarn)

Turn on glue gun so it can warm up
Form a loop at the end of the yarn and tie a knot to close loop
Snip off any left over yarn on end to make knot as clean and tight as possible

Dab a dot of hot glue on the fat end of the walnut
Adhere knot of the yarn to create a hanging loop on the end of the walnut acorn

Add hot glue around the knot to adhere the yarn in a circular fashion
Keep adding dots of glue as you wrap the yarn around the walnut

Continue until walnut is covered between 1/3 – 1/2 way through

Repeat for as many acorns you want to create (I made 12; 3 of each color)

Voila! Charming yarn walnut acorns for your decor

Tips & Tricks about the Walnut Yarn Acorns

Whenever you use spray paint make sure to do it in a well ventilated space. I choose to do all my spray painting outdoors, which is my personal recommendation. If you have a dedicated work shop and/or garage for such projects make sure doors and windows are open for proper ventilation.

I chose to use a very muted and neutral yarn color for a couple of reasons. 1. This yarn was in my craft stash, which I picked up at the Dollar Tree some time ago. I bought the yarn for another project in mind, which for the life of me I cannot remember. Regardless, it worked perfectly for his project, so here we are. 2. The color is very nature inspired and the color combination with the walnuts, provides a “real” acorn look. If color is your thing, use fun colors which blend into your decor. By all means, make it yours.

BUT the yarn color was actually too drab and matched the walnut natural color too closely, not allowing enough contrast. This prompted the decision to use metallic spray paint to create contrast, and consequently some glam. I like the look of the glitzy metallics with organic if you remember this project {DIY Autumn leaf wreath}.

If you don’t have silicone finger protectors, I highly recommend them for projects like this while using hot glue. Not only does it protect you, but it also provides ease of use since you are not concerned about burning yourself. The yarn is easier to adhere and manipulate as you cover the walnut.

I included the loop at the top of the acorn to act as a stem AND provide a hanger. This way the acorns can be used as ornaments down the road. I love a woodland and organic theme for the holidays so the idea of hanging these on a tree or garland crossed my mind. This is a prefect example of adapting craft projects to fit your needs and ideas.

Closing Thoughts

I love foraging from nature and using organic elements in my decor. BUT acorns for whatever reason have always eluded me. I have never found acorns in the wild in my area. I know they are here somewhere, but I think they hide from me {wink}. Also, I have heard that critters can be a problem with natural acorns, so I am ok making my own.

I love using walnuts in my holiday decor sprinkled here and there. Growing up we always had a bowl of nuts with crackers for anyone to pull up a chair and enjoy.
