If you want to delve into the world of mushrooms without a huge commitment, I have just the project for you today. Create your own mushroom fancy with this easy champagne cork mushroom craft.

Creating your own mushrooms from Champagne corks allows for the freedom of creative license. Make as many as you wish, use colors you prefer and display them anyway you want to. Have fun with a bit of whimsical decor, which is easy, inexpensive and a bit unexpected.

I have been talking about mushrooms here forever. Remember this post back in 2017 {my fascination with Mushrooms | Fungi | Toadstools}? Well, these charming cork mushrooms add to the whimsical collection easily.

How to Create Mushrooms from Champagne Corks

This is a super easy craft, which is also inexpensive. Craft as many mushrooms as desired. These are great for parties and events where multiples can be created easily. Also the colors are totally customizable. Make them yours.

Supplies You’ll Need

Champagne Corks
Assorted Ink Stamp Pads
Assorted Acrylic paints
Moss for Styling if Desired
Puffy White Paint
School Glue

Tools You’ll Need

Small crafting paint brushes
Small Paint Palette (disposable plate or Tupperware work just as well)

Crafting Pro Tip: Read all the instructions through once and then re-read everything again. This way, you are familiar with everything you need and know what to expect.

Step by Step Instructions

Prep

Read instructions thoroughly
Assemble champagne corks and make sure they are free of any debris

Paint

Using a paint brush paint bottom section of corks (stem), using white paint
Set cork(s) aside and allow stems to dry fully
Once bottom section of cork(s) are dry, apply a second coat of white paint on the stems only
Set cork(s) aside and allow stems to dry fully

Once bottom section of cork(s) are fully dry, paint the top domes with desired colors (I used earthy tones, but use colors of your choice)
Set cork(s) aside and allow domes to dry fully (apply a second coat on domes if necessary)

Once domes are dried fully, use brown paint to create random creases on stems
Set cork(s) aside and allow creases to dry fully
Once corks are dried fully, apply dots on dome (mushroom cap) using white puffy paint to create mushroom spots
Set cork(s) aside and allow to dry fully

Styling

Use ink pads to distress mushroom stems and add natural effects
Glue small patches of moss at the base to enhance

Tips & Recommendations to Keep In Mind

Painting Technique

The painting is done in sections (stems vs caps), allowing ease of holding opposite section while painting the other. You can also use skewers or tooth picks to hold up to dry or simply place corks on wax paper as I did. I painted in different directions to achieve optimal coverage. For example, the first coat of the stems I painted with up and down strokes, while the second coat I painted with horizontal strokes around the stem.

Color Options

This is the fun and creative portion of the project. I used colors I like, since they blend with my already existing collection plus it coordinates with the decor style of our home. Use colors which speak to you and compliment your decor.

Drying Time

Although there are many steps allowing for drying time in between, the actual drying periods are short. The cork is porous and absorbs the paint easily. My drying windows ranged from 15-30 minutes, which moved the project along quickly. The puffy paint requires a longer drying time. I allowed mine to cure over night.

Styling Ideas

Miniature Decor

Simply assemble your mushroom forest on a bed of moss and display by a windowsill. Display on a wood round or coaster or small tray or even a small plate. The miniature display will add an unexpected fresh and charming touch to its surroundings.

Plant Accent

The cork mushrooms are nature inspired, which makes a great accent for living plants. Plop a mini mushroom by your plant for an instant pop of personality. You can also use a skewer if you want the mushroom to have more prominence in the display.

Bowl Filler

The charming cork mushrooms make a perfect bowl filler for an unexpected decor accent. You can really place these anywhere. They would look great on a side table or shelving or on a kitchen counter. The possibilities are endless.

Hanging Charm

The cork material allows for easy manipulation. Simply insert an eye hook at the top of the mushroom cap and you can hang your pretty mushroom from anywhere. The mushroom charm is a great accent for a wreath or cabinet knob or as an ornament on a tree.

Place Card Holder
