My personal collection of transferware has been curated slowly through years of treasure hunting at second hand sources. Although transferware comes in a variety of colors, brown is showcased today which is perfect for the Fall season.

An antique secretary desk, which I inherited from my parents, sits in the living room with an old world dark and broody disposition. It’s the perfect stage for decor stylings whether for the seasons, a particular holiday or a special celebration. Collections shine when displayed on the secretary desk shelves. The brown transferware pieces are varied in shades, scale and shapes, which add interest, movement and depth to the display. All the pieces have been curated through years of thrifting.

Brown is a perfect color for Fall decor and here we are. Beyond that, brown can also be incorporated in other seasonal decor. Last year I shared this styling {How to Decorate a Christmas Mantel with Neutral Brown Tones}. This brown transferware styling can transition into Christmas decor easily, by removing the pumpkins and adding greenery, pretty ribbons and Christmas baubles.

Personal Note: The picture frames of my babies always sits in the secretary desk so I incorporate them most times. I inherited this antique desk from my parents’ home and it always displayed a picture of my mother on her wedding day during my childhood. I have continued the tradition with pictures of my littles, which are my two greatest masterpieces. These littles inspired this blog many, many years ago. And here we are. (For the sake of my new readers, and who might not know, my littles are 23 and 21 now).

Transferware pottery is created by transferring an image to a copper plate, which is transferred to a specially sized paper, which is finally transferred to the pottery body. Transfer ware is primarily on earthenware, but it is also found on ironstone, porcelain and bone china. I previously shared my green transfer ware collection here {thrifted green transferware goodies}. All the transferware pieces have been curated through years of thrifting excursions. They are mismatched and eclectic, but remain grounded in the same aesthetic.

Decorating Pro Tip: Thrifting is a treasure trove used as a secret weapon by interior designers and vintage store owners. Lean into unique and full of character thrifted finds to style a oozy and charming home

Like with any project, it’s best to start with a blank slate and build layers from there. Everything removed from the secretary desk allows for a thorough cleaning. Starting with a blank canvas eliminated unnecessary noise, which allows clarity and focus on a given project.

Vintage books are on repeat on the old secretary desk, carrying the library feels. The vintage books have also been collected through thrift shopping excursions. The books add texture and interest, while also providing purpose as risers and platforms. The antique French wooden vice is a favorite for displaying vintage books.

Once the foundation elements are in place start layering items with larger pieces in the back and working forward. Stack bigger pieces with smaller items on top or in front. The depth and movement layers create adds interest and captivates the eye.

Plenty of brown transferware pieces create the timeless and old world look in an understated manner. The pieces are varied and interesting, telling stories of bygone days. By spacing the pieces out throughout the display maintains interest and keeps the eye moving. Pumpkins are scattered about to provide more fall feels.

The brown transferware has a very rustic and earthy feel to itself, which pairs nicely with organic decor. Besides the pumpkins, a turkey feather in a vintage ink well and rustic florals peeking out of a transferware pitcher add more natural effects. Natural elements are always full of texture.

Adding hand crafted elements in your home always adds personalization and character. A book page pumpkin crafted years ago compliments feather, twig and velvet pumpkins. Also the larger transferware plate on the top shelf is a recent DIY {How to Create the Brown Transferware Look DIY}.

The pieces all have amazing detail, and I don’t even mind when some of them have chips or cracks. I believe it simply adds more character, showing the piece has been used and loved plenty. These vintage pieces add character and culture to fabulous collections.

  5. MaryJo, what a lovely collection of brown transferware! I love the few pieces I have, even if it is all fairly new.
