What Exactly are Moody Blooms?
Moody blooms evoke the feelings of cozy Fall days with rustic texture and broody color ways. The colors tend to be deeper in hue and at the same time washed out from brighter days. Flowers that reflect the emotions of the season always compliment any decor style.

There are many ways to use moody touched flowers throughout your home, inside and out. Lets explore the many ways to add fall feels to our homes with relaxed blooms and organic charm.
Dried Flowers for the Win!
Wilted and dried blooms create a mood all of their own and are perfect for decorating this time of year. You can naturally dry your own flowers or you can find dried and preserved flowers all over the marketplace. I included some options in the shopping section below. Hydrangeas from our garden are on repeat around here whether fresh, wilting or dried.

Above you can see some dried hydrangeas from last year in a zinc bucket. In the middle is a vintage ammunitiion bucket with preserved flower cone heads from when I worked at Whim House. The tall green floral bucket is one of my recent thrift finds, and it’s full of dried flowers from a long time ago arrangement. To give you perspective, here’s what the blooms looked like before they dried.

The blooms were moody when they were fresh to begin with, which we will talk about fresh moody flowers in more depth below. By simply allowing the flowers to naturally dry in the vase, I have reused them for many seasons. To dry my flowers naturally, I simply let them sit in the vase until all the water evaporates organically. Do not refill the vase, let all the water dry out, and allow the flowers to sit until they are fully dried. Now this isn’t a 100% fool proof method, and sometimes it doesn’t work, but I would say it works the majority of the time.

Of course anything under glass immediately creates an air of mystery, which pairs nicely with the moody dried flowers. Other preserved organic elements are also great Fall accents. These dried mushrooms are favorites of mine, because they are unusual and unique.

Hydrangeas, hydrangeas and more hydrangeas
My favorite dried blooms are hydrangeas and they come out to play this time of year all the time. And to be more specific, my favorite dried blooms are limelight hydrangeas. We have limelight hydrangea plants in the back yard and they provide a plethora of blooms every year. And every year I take full advantage.

Hydrangeas make great mantel fillers. You don’t even have to put them in a container. They give so much texture and movement simply scattered across a mantel, or a shelf, or a sideboard, or anywhere really.

They are relaxed, no fuss flowers which dry beautifully with an array of color hues. They start with just the subtle turning of the tips to full blown deep colored blooms. We use them inside and outside our home.

Hanging baskets are always fabulous vessels to display blooms. Hydrangeas provide great texture in hanging displays with great moody colors for all the Fall feels.

This Thanksgiving display we had on the church pew last year is one of my favorite looks. The burnt color on the hydrangeas is everything! These are the same hydrangeas from the opening image and you can see how the colors have mellowed.

Dried flowers will change and evolve as they age, which adds character and gives dried flowers such interest and appeal. Preserved flowers, on the other hand, will remain the same through the years since they are treated to be preserved, hence the name.
Save organically dried blooms from year after year
Although these homespun dried blooms will change over time, I recommend saving them. I use them again and again. These eucalyptus dried branches below are full of texture and fall feels.

I love bringing these out every year since they were a gift from some girlfriends when I turned 50. These eucalyptus branches were from Terrain, one of my favorite stores, and you can see them below in their prime. By the way, I turn 58 in November and I still bring them out every year.

I will be using them once again this year for a planned project scheduled in a couple of weeks. I hope you come back to see it or you can sign up to follow me here if you don’t want to miss new content.
Fresh Moody Arrangements
Of course flowers don’t need to be dried or preserved to be moody. There’s plenty of fresh flowers, which based on their color palette and arrangement can provide perfect moody fall feels.

Deep colors, plus edgy shapes add to the whole moody sensations. These vine floral fillers with the cone focal flower give the usually bright and happy sunflowers an edgy feel.

Succulents are fabulous any time of year, but planted in thrifted vintage silver, finished off with Spanish moss, provide the perfect cozy Fall feels. It’s amazing how small details can alter the atmosphere.

The moody vibes can also be taken outside with fall containers. Darker colored flowers and cabbages with all the great texture provide great broody feels on our patios and porches.

Spike and cone shaped flowers always provide great edgy fall feels. This echinacea below stopped me in my tracks at the garden center, and she had to come home with me.

Closing Thoughts
Are you in the mood for moody flowers? Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. But in all seriousness, I hope this helps and inspires you to decorate with broody blooms during the Autumnal months.

Dry your own flowers, whether store bought or from your own garden. You will be able to enjoy them again and again. If dried flowers isn’t your look, find some deep colored fresh flowers or spiky and cone shaped flowers to add some edgy yet cozy feels to your interiors.

Regardless of you decor aesthetic, flowers are always a welcome addition to any space. By evoking the feeling of the season, it makes your home feel current and loved. Thanks for being here friends and until next time.
